Ohio Amateur golf tourney set to start Tuesday

A field of 144 players, including defending champion Korey Ward of West Chester, is set to tee off Tuesday in the opening round of the 106th Ohio Amateur golf championship at Brookside Golf and Country Club.

The last time the tournament was held at the course in 2000, Ben Curtis won the championship by a record 17 shots. Three years later, Curtis captured the British Open title.

Stark County-area entrants include recent Northeast Ohio Amateur champion Jeff Mallette, who won the local qualifier at Canton Brookside, Daniel Belden, Brian Beebe, Mark Thomas, Ryan Troyer, Drew Davidson and Nick Paxos.

Ward, who will be a sophomore at Xavier this fall, overcame defending champion Michael Bernard?s three-stroke lead heading into the final round to win at NCR Country Club in Kettering. Four other past Ohio Am champions are in the field this year.

There will be cuts after 36 and 54 holes of the medal-play event, which runs through Friday.
