Using Genomics to Add Value and Address Problems in Energy and Mining

Genomics is a transformative technology that already has a key role in addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing society today. It is also becoming widely recognized as a critical foundation for numerous applications that will contribute to the emergence of a Canadian bio-economy.

Genome Canada and Canada's Genome Centres are focusing a significant amount of effort to build and improve ways of translating discoveries into new applications that lead to economic and social benefits as quickly as possible. In particular there is a strong need to involve industry so that research targets and results can find a useful home to bring those results into everyday use and generate practical social and economic value.

To reach these goals 7 sectors have been targeted for areas where genomics tools and technology are already being used or where there are new opportunities to use the technology to solve problems and overcome obstacles. Energy and Mining are 2 of the sectors where genomics tools are only beginning to be used and where there are definite advantages to deploying the new technology to help in production or environmental remediation.

Genome Alberta and the?Ontario Genomics Institute are championing a national Hydrocarbon Energy/ Metal Mining Genomics Strategy. The main goal of the strategy is to identify the challenges that the hydrocarbon energy and metal mining sectors are facing and to assess the role for (micro) biology/genomics/biotechnology to mitigate such challenges, including how to address the environmental impact. As part of Phase I, we have developed a?draft Strategy Document and you are invited to download the document and comment on the objectives and the technology:

Free up Space on iPad or iPhone with PhoneClean

If you are one of those folks who have a 16 GB iPad or iPhone you will find space runs out pretty quickly.? PhoneClean is an application that can free up space on iPad and iPhone by cleaning out temp files, flushing application cache and more without having to delete and uninstall iOS applications.

I only have a 16GB iPad 2nd generation and I ran out of space quickly, it is time consuming and cumbersome to have to dig through all installed applications to see what takes up the most space and delete them manually on the iPad.? This is why when iMobie contacted me and asked me to review Phone Clean I jumped on board.

iMobie PhoneClean

PhoneClean from iMobie is an application you install to your Windows or Mac Desktop, you run it when it is connected to your iPad, iPod or iPhone and it will scan your applications and iOS device and give you options to clean out and free up space.? I specifically was looking to free up iPad space since my iOS phone has 64GB and didn?t have a low memory issue.

PhoneClean is freeware, so after you download PhoneClean and install PhoneClean and run the application you will see this screen while it waits for you to connect your iOS device.

phoneclean thumb Free up Space on iPad or iPhone with PhoneClean

After connecting your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to the computer, PhoneClean will show you how much current free space you have on your device and give you the option to start a scan.

After starting the scan which takes a little bit as it checks every single application, you will then be presented with cleanup options and how much space can be saved.

Then simply select what you are willing to clean up and wipe away the unneeded data.? It will start cleaning up data and you can watch as it sorts through each application.

phoneclean cacheclean thumb Free up Space on iPad or iPhone with PhoneClean

I will point out that news based applications have the most offline files and cache, AP Mobile had 1/2 a gig by itself, but before I ran PhoneClean the CNN application was consuming 1.2GB of cache files itself separately which wasn?t reflected here.

After the clean up is confirmed, you get the output message on how much space was reclaimed on your iPad or iPhone.

phoneclean reclaimed thumb Free up Space on iPad or iPhone with PhoneClean

If you can?t part with any of the applications on your iOS device but you are desperate to free up space on your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch then PhoneClean is a recommended freeware tool to help free up memory on your iOS device.? I had no issues with it other than noticing the occasional typo like (file instead of files)?etc which is fairly common in freeware programs.

For those who had iOS space issues, how did you previously free up space?? Did you just delete applications or leverage another utility?

Gore Verbinski Heads for Pyongyang

gore-verbinski-slice

Gore Verbinski has been directing blockbuster films for almost a decade, but he may be returning to smaller material.? According to Deadline, Verbinski has teamed with New Regency to direct an adaptation of the graphic novel Pyongyang by Guy Deslisle.? The memoir follows the French-Canadian cartoonist?s travels through North Korea after obtaining a work visa (a rarity for a Westerner) for his job on a children?s cartoon show (I don?t know the name of the show but I assume it was Kim Jong-Il?s Super Fun Time Worship Your Beloved Supreme Leader Happy Hour; that?s a rough translation since my Korean is a little rusty).? Deslisle?s trip becomes more complicated when he?s accused of espionage because of course he is.

This sounds like a fun project for Verbinski, and also a return to his smaller-scale films like The Weather Man and Mouse Hunt.? Hit the jump for a synopsis of the graphic novel.? Verbinski?s next film, The Lone Ranger, opens July 3rd.

Here?s the synopsis of Guy Deslisle?s Pyongyang: A Journey in North Korea:

Famously referred to as one of the ?Axis of Evil? countries, North Korea remains one of the most secretive and mysterious nations in the world today. In early 2001 cartoonist Guy Delisle became one of the few Westerners to be allowed access to the fortresslike country. While living in the nation?s capital for two months on a work visa for a French film animation company, Delisle observed what he was allowed to see of the culture and lives of the few North Koreans he encountered; his findings form the basis of this remarkable graphic novel. Pyongyang is an informative, personal, and accessible look at a dangerous and enigmatic country. [Amazon]

Murals bring Manchester heritage to Northern Quarter | Manchester ...

Techhub Manchester

Salford Graphic Design students have brought the walls of a new technology workspace in Manchester?s Northern Quarter to life with a range of murals celebrating the computer science and creative arts heritage of the city.

BA (Hons) Graphic Design students were commissioned to create a number of large wall paintings at TechHub?s Manchester base, using illustration and typography to evoke the rich Mancunian history of computer science, innovation and artistic creativity.

TechHub is an international community which provides physical and virtual workspaces for technology entrepreneurs to meet, work, learn and collaborate. With facilities in London, Bucharest and Riga, in addition to Manchester, TechHub aims to help technology start-ups work smarter, develop faster and increase their chances of success by connecting with like-minded individuals and specialists from around the world.

Natasha Willcocks, Graphic Design lecturer at the University of Salford, commented: ?This was a fantastic project for our students because the work they produced will be seen by other graphic designers and technology professionals, giving the students the opportunity to showcase their work and get noticed by people who are in the same industry.?

Students worked for around 40 hours at the space to produce a collection of interlinking designs and illustrations, which will be showcased to hundreds of creative professionals across the globe as the TechHub community begins to grow in Manchester.

Doug Ward of TechHub said: ?The Graphic Design course at the University of Salford comes highly recommended within the industry as being very creative and dynamic, and the standard of students? work was very high.

?They quickly understood the TechHub brand and ethos but, most importantly, they appreciated how essential location and history are to TechHub Manchester, and this has been communicated through their visual work.Techhub Manchester 2

?We wanted to give the students an opportunity to put their mark on an up-and-coming centre of innovation, with the aim of showcasing their work to potential employers.?

The murals will be officially launched at an open gallery event at TechHub, 3rd Floor, Carvers Warehouse, 77 Dale Street, Manchester, M1 2HG, on Thursday 31 January 6.30-8.30pm. Google sued in UK over Safari tracking

(AP) ? A British law firm says that about a dozen Apple customers are suing Internet search leader Google in the U.K. over its alleged secret tracking of their Internet browsing habits.

London-based law firm Olswang said that 12 Apple users were taking the Internet search leader to court over small pieces of tracking code ? known as cookies ? surreptitiously installed on computers and smartphones.

Google found itself in hot water last year after it emerged that the company had circumvented privacy features on Apple's Safari web browsers to deposit cookies on millions of users' computers. The issue has already cost Google $22.5 million, which it agreed to pay the U.S. Federal Trade Commission to settle the claims last year.

Google said it had no comment on the lawsuit.

Absolute Devotion & Loyalty, That's a Dog | Steve Dale's Pet World

By Steve Dale, Sunday at 10:08 am

Absolute Devotion & Loyalty, That's a Dog
Captain sleeps on his owner's grave every night.

A German Shepherd dog, called Captain, has slept on the grave of his owner every night at 6pm for the last six years. The dog's owner Miguel Guzm?n died in 2006.

According to Internet reports, Captain, the dog, disappeared while the family attended the funeral services. A week later relatives of Guzm?n were visiting the cemetery when they were astounded to find the dog on the owner's grave.

The cemetery director reportedly says that the dog comes around each night at 6 p.m., and has done so for the past six years.

Even if this an Internet hoax (I have not verified that the story is true), we do know dogs in the past have expressed such absolute devotion and loyalty. This is who dogs are.

For those who maintain dogs don't really love - if this isn't love, what is?

Russia presses on with plans to try dead whistleblower

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia pushed forward with plans for the posthumous trial of a lawyer on tax evasion charges on Monday, despite a boycott by relatives and lawyers who said President Vladimir Putin's government was "dancing on the grave of a dead man".

Sergei Magnitsky died in 2009 after complaining repeatedly he was denied treatment as his health declined in jail, prompting the United States last month to bar entry to Russians accused of involvement in his death or serious rights abuses.

Putin, restored to the presidency in May, has dismissed the international furor over the case, saying last month the lawyer had died of a heart attack.

Although Putin has rejected suggestions Magnitsky was tortured in prison, the Kremlin's own human rights council has voiced suspicions he was beaten to death.

Magnitsky's former employer, investment fund Hermitage Capital, says the lawyer was killed because he had accused law enforcement and tax officers of stealing $230 million from the state by setting up bogus tax refunds.

Magnitsky's mother and her attorney refused to show up for a preliminary hearing for a trial they denounced as a politically motivated attack on a dead man, forcing the Moscow court hearing the case to appoint defense lawyers.

"I think it is inhuman to try a dead man," Magnitsky's mother Natalya, who stayed away from the scheduled preliminary hearing, told Reuters by telephone. "This is not a court case but some kind of farce, and I will not take part in it."

Her lawyer, Nikolai Gorokhov, said that according to Russian law the dead can be prosecuted at the request of relatives seeking to rehabilitate a loved one.

"The trial cannot be just, because it is simply illegal," said Gorokhov, who also refused to attend the hearing. "The entire trial is set up only to blacken Sergei's name."

"It's a dance on the grave of a dead man," he said.

He said the trial was aimed to discredit Magnitsky and Hermitage owner William Browder - who is to be tried alongside Magnitsky in absentia - and paint them as the criminals.

No Russian official has been convicted of any crime related to Magnitsky's death and Browder has said several officials allegedly involved in the tax fraud are living lives of luxury.

The Tverskoi district court postponed the pre-trial hearing until February 18.

DIPLOMATIC SPAT

The case against Magnitsky was initially closed after his death in November 2009, but authorities reopened it in 2011 as international criticism over his death - and Russia's apparent reluctance to hold anyone criminally responsible - mounted.

Magnitsky and Browder were charged last year, weeks before the United States adopted the Magnitsky Act which imposes asset freezes and bars from entry to the United States anyone suspected of a role in his death.

Russia responded with a law that imposed similar measures in return and also barred Americans adopting Russian children, adding to tension that has increased since Putin's return to the presidency last May.

The legislative confrontation has added to strains over issues ranging from the Syrian conflict to the treatment of Kremlin opponents since Putin began his successful bid to return to the presidency after four years as prime minister.

The exchanges have clouded a 'reset' in ties that U.S. President Barack Obama launched early in his first term, months before Magnitsky's death underscored risks faced by Russians who challenge the state.

One prison official was tried last year but prosecutors asked the court to clear him after Putin said Magnitsky had not been tortured, and the judge complied.

Browder, who lives in Britain and campaign for the U.S. legislation, has also said he would not take part in the trial.

He was one of the biggest Western investors in Russia but was barred from the country in 2005 as Hermitage found itself under increasing official pressure after he aired vocal criticism of corporate governance at large Russian companies.

Amnesty International's regional director, John Dalhuisen said the Magnitsky trial was an attempt to deflect attention from those who committed the crimes he exposed.

It would set "a dangerous precedent that would open a whole new chapter in Russia's worsening human rights record," he said.

Boy Scouts consider end to gay ban

DALLAS (Reuters) - Boy Scouts of America is discussing ending a longstanding ban on gay members and whether to allow local organizations to decide their own policy, a spokesman said on Monday.

The organization has been under attack from gay rights groups and some parents for discriminating against gay members and gay leaders.

"The BSA is discussing potentially removing the national membership restriction regarding sexual orientation," spokesman Deron Smith said in an email to Reuters.

"The policy change under discussion would allow the religious, civic or educational organizations that oversee and deliver Scouting to determine how to address this issue," the spokesman said.

NATO missile defense battery in Turkey operational

BRUSSELS (AP) ? The first of six Patriot missile batteries being deployed to Turkey to protect against attack from Syria was declared operational and placed under NATO command, the international organization said Saturday.

The battery, provided by the Netherlands, is meant to protect the city of Adana by shooting down missiles that could come over the Syrian border. Turkey has become a harsh critic of the regime in Syria, where a vicious civil war has left at least 60,000 people dead.

The United States, Germany and the Netherlands are providing two batteries each of the latest version of the U.S.-made Patriots. The other five Patriot batteries are expected to be in place and operational in the coming days in Adana, Kahramanmaras and Gaziantep.

"This is a clear demonstration of the agility and flexibility of NATO forces and of our willingness to defend Allies who face threats in an unstable world," Admiral James Stavridis, NATO's Supreme Allied Commander for Europe, said in a statement.

NATO reiterated Saturday that the Patriots are for defensive purposes only. Syria has not fired any of its surface-to-surface missiles at Turkey during its nearly two-year civil war and its government has described the NATO deployment as a provocation.

NATO also deployed Patriot batteries to Turkey during the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq 10 years ago. They were never used and were withdrawn a few months later.

James Lee, Jinnyboy and I talking about short films (The Star, 6th of ...

. The article came out exactly three weeks ago while I

. (I found out about that, naturally, from friends on Facebook.)

The other interviewees were filmmakers James Lee and Jin Lim (more popularly known as JinnyBoy), well, excuse ME for not having a name that starts with J.

Kenneth and I had a really long email interview, which never really made it to the final article, but I will be posting that later. For now, you can just have a look at the full article:

Short films are making waves at festivals and raking in millions of YouTube views, but little is known about this increasingly popular entertainment form.

THE short film seems to be everywhere these days. From entries in prestigious film festivals and corporate-sponsored competitions to a neverending stream of YouTube uploads, its profile is at an all-time high.

Even ?aunties? have heard of the big names in short film. One lady in her 50s was overheard in a restaurant asking her son, ?What is this Jinnyboy-Jinnyboy all about??

Of course, JinnyboyTV is our local short film YouTube sensation, but this curious lady?s question just goes to show how widespread the phenomenon has become.

Why are millions of Malaysians tuning in to watch short films? When did this sudden fascination with short films begin? And who are these filmmakers who are redefining the way entertainment is produced and consumed?

Star2 spoke to some of the country?s best-known filmmakers ? James Lee, Edmund Yeo and JinnyboyTV?s Jin Lim ? to gain some insights.

The reel beginning

Director James Lee attributes the proliferation of short films to the advent of digital cinematography. The graphic designer turned filmmaker recalls making his first short film in 1999 using conventional filmmaking techniques.

?My first short film was a gangster flick called Ah Yu?s Story. Only production companies could afford filming equipment back then as it was so expensive ? a film camera could fetch up to tens of thousands of ringgit. So I borrowed a friend?s camera and rented his studio to edit the film,? he says.

He described the editing process, using the linear video editing method, as tedious and painstaking. ?The film was shot in just two days but it took a month and a half to edit the brief 10- to 15-minute long film,? Lee adds, joking that he has since destroyed all traces of the short film because of its poor quality.

Thankfully, the advent of digital cinematography around the turn of the millennium meant that motion pictures could now be shot and stored digitally, doing away with the heavy (and expensive) rolls of film involved in conventional filmmaking. What?s more, Lee welcomes the non-linear film editing system as it makes the editing process a breeze.

This newfound ease in shooting and editing films gave rise to a burgeoning crop of filmmakers called ?The Malaysian New Wave?. Lee, along with Amir Muhammad, Tan Chui Mui, Liew Seng Tat, Woo Ming Jin, the late Yasmin Ahmad and other filmmakers pioneered this independent filmmaking movement whereby films ? once produced only by established production houses ? could now be made by self-taught filmmakers.

Fast-forward a few years, and the arrival of YouTube in 2005 accelerated the short film phenomenon. Not only were short films easy to produce, the video-sharing website now made them accessible to viewers all over the globe with just the click of a mouse.

JinnyboyTV?s Jin Lim is passionate about making humorous short films that inspire and uplift audiences.

The allure of short films

Lee suspects many young people have gone into making short films because it?s a great way to hone their skills as they try to break into the movie business. ?It?s a good training ground for aspiring filmmakers as they get to mess around and experiment with various creative ideas without being bound by commercial pressures,? he opines.

?Twenty years ago when I said I wanted to become a filmmaker, it felt like such a far-fetched dream ? Today, if you want to become a filmmaker, there?s no excuse not to try. You can just shoot it with a smartphone and edit it over the weekend,? he adds. (Lee has since gone on to become one of the country?s most prominent mainstream movie directors; his notable works include Histeria and Petaling Street Warriors.)

What attracted Japan-based Malaysian filmmaker Edmund Yeo to short films wasn?t the prospect of becoming a full-length feature film director one day. He considers the short film an art form in itself and is simply in love with it.

?There is a lot of joy and passion in making short films because some stories are more suitable to be told in such a manner,? says Yeo, who left for Tokyo in 2008 to pursue a Masters programme in film.

?I like the fact that short films demand the discipline to tell a story within a limited running time, so you must be precise and do as much as you can. I also don?t have to commit too much of my time or money to make a short film,? he continues.

Being cost and time efficient are certainly factors that attract many people to try their hand at short films, including JinnyboyTV?s Jin Lim. But besides that, the radio deejay-cum-filmmaker saw short films as a great medium to promote the Malaysian culture.

?To put Malaysia on the map and bridge the gap between Malaysia and the rest of the world. That is JinnyboyTV?s objective,? he says.

Lim came to the decision after witnessing a local band being booed off stage by their countrymen in favour of the night?s international act. As such, he believes in portraying typically Malaysian scenarios in his short films to help his compatriots embrace their identity, as evidenced in the slew of distinctly Malaysian-themed short films such as My Generasi and Only In Malaysia.

Though it seems the appeal of short films differs from one filmmaker to another, they all agree on one thing: the format?s ability to deal with topics that are seldom talked about in the mainstream television or film industry.

For instance, many characters in short films have to deal with prejudice and injustice in various forms. These are often conveyed through metaphors, allowing viewers to interpret what they will from the visuals.

There are good reasons, too, why many viewers like to watch short films. With an average running time of 10 to 15 minutes (sometimes even less), such bite-sized entertainment is perfect for viewers who generally have shorter attention spans these days.

And thanks to the Internet, short films are easily accessible and free of charge. Smartphone users can watch them on the go and if they like what they see, share them with their friends and family on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Ultimately, it is the sense of authenticity and rawness that draws viewers to watch short films.

?A lot of viewers find our short films very relatable because we don?t just make up stories. We make them as real as possible by using situations we?ve gone through before,? Lim shares.

A perplexing watch

The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences in the United States (the folks who run the Academy Awards) plainly defines a short film as ?an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits.?

But it seems the short film genre ? apart from being, well, short ? has taken on another definition over the years.

Consider this example: the opening scene is an empty room with a curtain billowing in the breeze that?s coming through an open window. The focus on this delicate movement seems a great way to start the movie. A minute goes by, and then two, and three. Then it hits you: this is the movie.

Short films have somehow gained a reputation for being abstract and conceptual. In fact, many short films that go on to win awards in prestigious film festivals thrive on such avant-garde themes.

?In the 80s and 90s, the only place you could go to study film was overseas. Many students who went to New York, in particular, were exposed to the city?s artistic, experimental way of thinking, and this was reflected in their works when they returned,? Lee says, giving one possible reason for the start of the short film trend in Malaysia.

Yeo sees great beauty in experimental short films as they are open to interpretation. ?Films, if you look at them as more than just a mere form of entertainment but also as works of art like literature, can be interpreted differently by different people based on their own backgrounds,? he says.

Yeo nabbed the Sonje Award, honouring directors with the best short films, at the 2010 Busan International Film Festival for his work Inhalation. He believes that short films which may seem abstract or difficult to understand should not be dismissively labelled as such, because they could be touching and emotional to others.

Lim, on the other hand, prefers to take a light-hearted, humorous approach to his short films owing to his cheerful personality. ?I always wanted to do comedy. I?m very talkative, and I love cracking jokes and making fun of people,? he says.

JinnyboyTV?s funny flicks like Abuden?! and Ah Wing ? Malaysia?s Number 1 Salesman have fetched around a million views each on YouTube. ?We ultimately want viewers to feel happy when they watch our short films,? he concludes.

As such, there is truly no set definition of what makes a short film (besides the length, of course). They need not always be deep and philosophical. They can be funny, scary or simply out of this world and explore any genre that full-length commercial films or television shows would.

Creative boundaries

Short films are not subjected to the approval of censorship boards as they are usually either posted on the Internet or screened among small groups of people, giving filmmakers unbridled freedom. As such, it is not uncommon for viewers to find expletives or nudity when watching a short film.

However, Lee believes the public shouldn?t be too quick to take offence. ?We must first understand why the expletives were used. Were they used to offend viewers or to add a sense of realness to the scene?? he says, adding that it would be odd to portray a char kuay teow seller, for example, who doesn?t mutter an expletive or two.

Nevertheless, Lee stresses that it is the responsibility of the filmmaker to warn potential viewers of the short film?s mature content.

Lim, on the other hand, avoids the use of profanity and subject matters relating to sex, drugs and alcohol. ?We want JinnyboyTV to be a wholesome channel because we know kids are watching it,? he says of his YouTube channel that has more than 100,000 subscribers of various ages.

The next generation of entertainment?

Lee feels that short films in Malaysia have definitely come a long way, but he still sees room for improvement.

?The short films made by filmmakers today are of a higher quality than those made 10 years ago in terms of lighting, image quality and the angles captured. But filmmakers still need to work on ... aspects like storytelling, the script and the acting.?

All three filmmakers agree that the short film phenomenon will continue to exist and grow in the future, though it is unlikely that it will supplant traditional forms of entertainment.

Lim strongly believes that new media, notably video-sharing websites like YouTube, will be the new platform for people to consume what he sees as ?the next generation of entertainment?.

Here's my most recent short film, LAST FRAGMENTS OF WINTER. Uploaded by the folks at Rotterdam Film Fest onto their Youtube channel. It will be taken down in February.

If 24 minutes of my hard work is too much for you to stomach, you can always just check out

South Korea central bank questions Bank of Japan easing

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - South Korea's central bank governor on Saturday questioned the efficacy of Japan's decision to ease monetary policy, saying its decision to start buying assets in 2014 could have unintended long-term consequences.

The move by the Bank of Japan was also done in a hasty manner and would lead to large movements in the foreign exchange market, said Bank of Korea Governor Kim Chong-soo.

"What they did created a couple of problems," Kim said in an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos. "One is that the level (of the currency) is affected, and the pace of change is also a problem. They did it too hastily."

Key for the Bank of Korea is a stable exchange rate, Kim added.

The yen has come under pressure since reports on Thursday quoted Japan's deputy economy minister, Yasutoshi Nishimura, as saying the yen's decline is not over, and that a dollar/yen level of 100 would not be a concern.

The Japanese currency is now trading around a 2-1/2 year low against the dollar at around 90 yen, as the market remained focused on Japan's pursuit of a reflationary economic policy.

Talk about a currency war has dominated discussions at the Swiss ski resort of Davos this week, with many central bankers and business executives questioning the wisdom of continuing an easy money policy.

Kim's comments come as top executives at Japanese companies say that the Bank of Japan has been too slow in responding to the yen's rise after the financial crisis.

"There is no explanation why the Japanese currency should appreciate 40 percent to the dollar after the financial crisis, while the won decreased compared to the dollar," said Nissan's Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn on Friday.

Recycle plastic waste into 'ink' for 3-D printers

14 hrs.

As enthusiasm grows for 3-D printers, so does a familiar complaint to just about everyone still living in a 2-D inkjet world: the maddeningly high cost and inefficiency of replacement cartridges. Enter the Filabot, a contraption that turns just about all your household plastic waste into "ink" for 3-D printers.

3-D printers melt strips of plastic filament into a gooey paste that is spewed out one layer at a time to create all sorts of plastic parts, gizmos and architect models. The printers are a sign of the future, when we can print just about anything we?d ever want with the press of a button.

For now, the printers mostly deal in the realm of plastics and are popular among early-adopter techies, designers?and people on a mission to change the world for the better. In addition to the cost of the printers, which have begun to fall, plastic filament starts at around $50 for a 2.2-pound spool.

The Filabot was developed by Tyler McNaney, a college student, and financed with funds raised on Kickstarter, the crowdfunding website. It sits on a desktop and is designed to grind and convert everyday plastic waste such as milk jugs, water bottles, and plastic wrap into filament for a future print job.

Early enthusiasts paid $350 for first-run versions of the device, according to Treehugger. A final price for the public version is yet to be announced, but it should pay for itself rather quickly and keep household plastic waste out of landfills and the oceans. What?s more, it means you recycle bad print jobs.

Attention shoppers: Another credit card fee is here

1 day

It could soon cost you more to shop with a credit card at some stores. As of this Sunday, Jan. 27, merchants who accept credit cards issued by Visa and MasterCard will be allowed to add a service charge to the purchase price.

Visa and MasterCard had always prohibited merchants from doing this. They agreed to change the rules and allow the surcharge as part of the settlement of an antitrust suit brought by retailers.

The surcharge is supposed to equal the actual cost of processing the credit card transaction, which is typically 1.5 to 3 percent. Under the agreement, the fee is capped at 4 percent. The surcharge can vary based on the type of card. For example, it could be higher for a rewards card or premier card.

Merchants still cannot add a surcharge to debit card transactions.

The big question is: Will any stores do this? Should you worry about paying a credit card surcharge?

?We have discussed the settlement with many, many merchants, and not a single merchant we have spoken to plans to surcharge,? Craig Sherman, spokesman for the National Retail Federation (NRF), said in a statement. The NRF was not involved in the class action lawsuit.

NBC News contacted some of the country?s largest retailers. Wal-Mart,?Target, Sears and Home Depot said they have no plans to add a credit card surcharge.

Credit card surcharges are banned by law in 10 states: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Oklahoma and Texas.

Visa and MasterCard have rules that require retailers to handle credit cards the same way in all of their stores across the country. That means a chain with stores in any of the 10 states where a surcharge is banned would not be able to have a surcharge at any of its stores.

The National Retail Federation points out that under terms of the settlement, a merchant who adds a surcharge to purchases on a Visa or MasterCard would have to do the same with American Express cards. But AMEX prohibits surcharge fees. So a merchant who accepts American Express as well as Visa/MasterCard would not be able to surcharge any of those cards.

?The bottom line is that very few retailers would be able to surcharge under the settlement, and that the vast majority don?t want to surcharge even if they could,? the NRF?s Sherman said.

Ed Mierzwinski, Director of Consumer Programs at U.S. PIRG agrees.

?In the brick-and-mortar world, no one who does any sort of volume business is going to want to surcharge because it will drive their customer crazy and slow down transactions,? Mierzwinski said.

In fact, most consumer advocates believe that except for some small retailers, a credit card surcharge is a non-issue in the short-term.

But Edgar Dworsky, founder of ConsumerWorld.org, worries that over time surcharges will gain traction.

?It?s predictable what?s going to happen,? he said. ?We?re at the top of the hill and we?re going to start going down that slippery slope.?

Dworsky points out that stores factor in the cost of processing credit cards when they price their merchandise. Charging for that again, he said, would be double-dipping, unless stores rolled back their prices ? which no one expects them to do.

?We shouldn?t have gotten to the point, but unfortunately because of the court settlement we have,? Dworsky told me. ?There?s no one standing up for consumers and saying that this is really bad.?

Dworsky points to Australia, where surcharging credit card use began in 2003. At first, few merchants charged the fee.? His research shows that approximately one-third of the sellers there ? including some hotels, supermarkets, department stores and utilities ? now charge extra to use a credit card.?

What about disclosures??
The advocacy group Consumer Action has published a booklet on credit card checkout fees. It warns shoppers to be on the lookout for these fees and advises them to express their dissatisfaction.?Customers shouldn?t stand for it,? said Ruth Susswein Consumer Action?s deputy director of national priorities. ?Our advice is to tell them you don?t like the fee and this makes you want to take your business elsewhere.?

The new rules from Visa and MasterCard require retailers who apply a credit card surcharge to post a notice at the store?s entrance. The exact percentage of the surcharge does not need to be disclosed until the point of sale. The customer receipt must list the amount of the surcharge.

Online stores with a surcharge will not be required to have a notice on the home page. They only need to alert shoppers about this when they reach the page where credit cards are first mentioned. In most cases, that means the final step of checkout when the purchase is being completed.

Not the end of this story?
The settlement that allows merchants to impose a surcharge is only preliminary. The court has yet to issue its final ruling in this case. That?s expected later this year.?

Once that happens, various retailers and business groups plan to challenge the settlement. That could drag into late 2014.

For now, the possibility that the settlement could be modified will probably keep most businesses of any size from instituting credit card fees.

?We?re not convinced this is going to be an issue,? Consumer Action?s Susswein told me. ?They may never do it, but as individual consumers we need to be aware.?

2nd Most Expensive Home Sale in U.S.? Silicon ... - AOL Real Estate

2nd most expensive home sale: this mansion in Woodside, Calif.

Our eyes nearly popped out of our heads when we saw the reported sale price of this Woodside, Calif., mega-mansion: $117.5 million! If it's true, it would be the second most expensive home sale ever in the United States. (Billionaire Stanley Kroenke holds the No. 1 spot for his $132.5 million purchase of a Montana ranch last November.)

Bay Area blog SF Luxe came across the shocking discovery, pointing to public records on listings site Redfin showing the astronomical sale price of the 8,930-square-foot home in the middle of Silicon Valley. Our buddies at Curbed, though, expressed a bit of skepticism, saying: "It could also be a fat finger error at the property records office." We can't be totally certain, but there is some evidence that the sale price may be the real deal. A historic Colonial in Woodside went on the market for $85 million last September, and Russian billionaire Yuri Milner coughed up $100 million for a home in nearby Los Altos Hills, Calif.

The mega-mansion, previously owned by private equity bigwig Tully Friedman and designed by starchitect Allan Greenberg, was not publicly listed for sale, according to SF Luxe. The blog did not reveal the buyer, but said that "it's a name with which you are undoubtedly familiar." (Mark Zuckerberg?) The stunning neoclassical home, which sits on nine acres, has 360-degree mountain views.

Avoid paying a premium on Valentine's Day

6 hrs.

NEW YORK -- With Valentine's Day less than three weeks away, it's time to start planning what you want to buy your loved ones. Whether it's chocolates, flowers or something else special, a big expression of love doesn't have to come with a big price tag.

In 2012, the average person celebrating Valentine's Day shelled out $126.03, up 8.5 percent over 2011, according to the National Retail Federation's poll of shoppers conducted by research company BIGinsight. That was the highest level of spending in the survey's 10-year history.

If you're shelling out that kind of money, it makes sense to get the most for it.

"You can make your money go a lot further. You just have to be creative," says Lindsay Sakraida, features editor at deal aggregator Dealnews.com.

Here are some tips for Cupid on a budget:

Shop now
Now is the time to buy winter clearance items like luxurious cashmere sweaters, or leather accessories like gloves at up to 80 percent off, Sakraida says. The winter merchandise will be gone if you wait much longer.

You can also scoop up holiday candy in the clearance bins, remove the big Christmas bow and redecorate the box with big red hearts instead.

Buying now applies to jewelry, too. According to research done by dealnews.com, prices usually tick up for jewelry in the first two weeks of February from January levels.

If you can't buy now, you can try to offset those price hikes by looking for a coupon from sites like ice.com, Limoges Jewelry and Netaya.com. So start looking now for coupons that can take an extra 15 percent to 30 percent off. Most of the coupons came out in the last week of January a year ago, according to Dealnews.com's research.

Search for special financing
Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, will offer for the first time a financing deal for six, 12 or 18 months on a jewelry purchase made in the store with a Wal-Mart credit card, Feb. 1 through Dec. 31. Kay Jewelers is also offering special financing.

Use your smartphone to compare prices
Sites like thefind.com, a search engine that allows shoppers to get the best prices for over 320 million products from more than 500,000 stores.

Thefind.com is now offering a new price match feature, which will let you know which stores are matching their rivals. Thefind's app lets you scan bar codes in stores and will provide a list of retailers that carry the item, prices, and whether it is eligible for a price match at a specific retailer.

If you want to send flowers, scrutinize the delivery costs, says Fiona Dias, chief strategy officer at ShopRunner, a subscription online shopping service. Some sites can charge anywhere from $15 to $25.

A romantic dinner
However, there may be no need to fight holiday crowds at a restaurant. Jodi Furman, author of a blog called Livefabuless.com, says it can be just as romantic to gather some gourmet food from places like Whole Foods Market and prepare a meal at home.

"It's all about making something personal and special," she said.?

Nanoparticles digging the world's smallest tunnels

Jan. 23, 2013 ? The world's smallest tunnels have a width of a few nanometers only. Researchers from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Rice University, USA, have dug such tunnels into graphite samples. This will allow structuring of the interior of materials through self-organization in the nanometer range and tailoring of nanoporous graphite for applications in medicine and battery technology.

Results are now presented in the scientific journal Nature Communications.

The tunnels are manufactured applying nickel nanoparticles to graphite which then is heated in the presence of hydrogen gas. The surface of the metal particles, that measure a few nanometers only, serves as a catalyst removing the carbon atoms of the graphite and converting them by means of hydrogen into the gas methane. Through capillary forces, the nickel particle is drawn into the "hole" that forms and bores through the material. The size of the tunnels obtained in the experiments was in the range of 1 to 50 nanometers, which about corresponds to one thousandth of the diameter of a human hair.

To furnish proof of the real existence of these graphite tunnels, the researchers have made use of scanning electron and scanning tunneling microscopy. "Microscopes, in fact, image only the upper layers of the sample," the principal authors of the study, Maya Lukas and Velimir Meded from KIT's Institute of Nanotechnology, explain. "The tunnels below these upper layers, however, leave atomic structures on the surface whose courses can be traced and which can be assigned to the nanotunnels by means of the very detailed scanning tunneling microscopy images and based on computerized simulations." In addition, the depth of the tunnels was determined precisely by means of a series of images taken by a scanning electron microscope from different perspectives.

Porous graphite is used, for example, in the electrodes of lithium ion batteries. The charge time could be reduced using materials with appropriate pore sizes. In medicine, porous graphite could serve as a carrier of drugs to be released over longer periods of time. Replacing graphite by nonconductive materials, e.g. boron nitride, with atomic structures similar to that of graphite, the tunnels could serve as basic structures for nanoelectronic components such as novel sensors or solar cells.

The graphite tunnel study was carried out by the study groups headed by Pulickel M. Ajayan from Rice University, USA, and Ralph Krupke and Wolfgang Wenzel from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

Israel's Netanyahu shrugs off surprise losses

Hawkish Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed victory in Israel's parliamentary election, shrugging off surprise losses to center-left challengers and vowing to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Exit polls showed the Israeli leader's right-wing Likud and the ultra-nationalist Yisrael Beitenu would remain the biggest bloc in the 120-member assembly, but with only 31 seats. The two parties previously held 42 seats.

If the exit polls compiled by three local broadcasters prove correct ? and they normally do in Israel ? Netanyahu would be on course for a third term in office, perhaps leading a hardline coalition that would promote Jewish settlement on occupied land.

But his weakened showing in Tuesday's election, which he had called nine months early in the hope of a strong new mandate for his confrontation with Iran, could complicate his struggle to forge an alliance with a stable majority in parliament.

"I am proud to be your prime minister, and I thank you for giving me the opportunity, for the third time, to lead the state of Israel," the 63-year-old leader told a cheering crowd in the early hours of Wednesday at his campaign headquarters.

Netanyahu said he planned to form as broad a governing coalition as possible, suggesting he would seek partners beyond his traditional ultra-nationalist and religious allies. His first call may be to Yair Lapid, a former television anchorman whose centrist, secular party came from nowhere to second place.

"The first challenge was and remains preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons," Netanyahu said.

Iran denies it is planning to build an atomic bomb, and says Israel, widely believed to have the only nuclear arsenal in the Middle East, is the biggest threat to the region.

Netanyahu views Tehran's nuclear program as a threat to Israel's existence and has stoked international concern by hinting at possible Israeli military action to thwart it.

He has shunted Palestinian peacemaking well down the agenda despite Western concern to keep the quest for a solution alive.

The surprise star of Israel's election was a former television news anchor whose centrist party soared to second place in the ballot only months after he took up active politics.

As leader of the new party Yesh Atid (There's a Future), Yair Lapid, 49, has pressed on with a fight, once championed by his late cabinet minister father, against the influence a growing Orthodox community has on many aspects of life in the Jewish state.

Lapid won support among middle-class, secular voters by promising to resolve a growing housing shortage, abolish military draft exemptions for Jewish seminary students and seek an overhaul of the failing education system.

Some in Netanyahu's party acknowledged that the election had gone somewhat awry. "We anticipated we would lose some votes to Lapid, but not to this extent," Likud campaign adviser Ronen Moshe told Reuters.

Lapid?s party should have 18 or 19 seats, exit polls showed - a stunning result for a newcomer to politics in a field of 32 contending parties.?

Supporters broke out in dance at his Tel Aviv headquarters after the exit polls: "I'm excited," a beaming Lapid told reporters. "Few people expected we would go this far."?

Western anxiety
Whatever permutation finally emerges, a Netanyahu-led government is likely to resist any push for a peace deal with the Palestinians that would come anywhere near satisfying the moderates who seek a viable independent state alongside Israel.

Britain warned Israel on Tuesday it was losing international support, saying Jewish settlement expansion had almost killed off prospects for a two-state solution.

Netanyahu's relations with U.S. President Barack Obama have been notably tense and Martin Indyk, former U.S. ambassador to Israel, told the BBC that the election was unlikely to change that.

"President Obama doesn't have high expectations that there's going to be a government in Israel committed to making peace and is capable of the kind of very difficult and painful concessions that would be needed to achieve a two-state solution," he said.

Tuesday's vote was the first in Israel since Arab uprisings swept the region two years ago, reshaping the Middle East.

8z honored as a Beta Brokerage | Inside Real Estate News

Lane Hornung

Lane Hornung

Article Highlights:

  • 8z named Beta Brokerage for innovative practices by Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate.

Lane Hornung, CEO of 8z, believes consumers come first.

  • Eight other companies nationwide also were named as Beta Brokerage firms.

Lane Hornung doesn?t recruit broker to 8z Real Estate.

He ?selects? them.

?We believe real estate is broken, and we are fixing it,? Hornung, the co-founder of 8z, ?told Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate.

Hornung selects agents for 8z ?who are into our purpose of fixing real estate,? Hornung explained to the giant real estate company, which recently named 8z as a Beta Brokerage firm for ?doing things differently in business and breaking the rules of tradition.?

?Our whole business system is designed to have agents who know a neighborhood and who can provide value beyond the Internet. We emphasize local expertise,? Hornung said.

Boulder-based 8z is a sponsor of InsideRealEstateNews.com; indeed, its relationship with IREN was cited by Better Homes and Gardens as an innovative practice by Hornung.

Last Friday, Hornung was in New York City to be honored as a Beta Brokerage at the annual Real Estate Connect conference sponsored by Inman News.

His company was one of nine named as a Beta Brokerage firm for 2012. ?These companies did not win, meaning there was no structured competition,? a spokeswoman for Better Homes and Gardens said. ?Rather they were selected by our brand based on their innovative approaches to and strategies within the real estate industry.?

In 2010, when the designation was launched, Live Urban of Denver was names as a Beta Brokerage.

It is all about the consumer at 8z, in contrast to some other firms, where owners of ?franchise offices identify its customers as real estate agents in the office who are paying a fee for the desk and the company name, Hornung said.

?It is nice to be recognized as a brokerage that is trying to do things a little different and improve the consumer experience,? said Hornung, who launched 8z in January 2010, after a dozen years as a broker. He also is a co-founder of COhomefinder.com. 8z ?takes its name from the fact that all Zip Codes in Colorado begin with the number 8. Hornung also has branched into Northern California, opening an 8z operation in Burlingame, Calif.

Last year, the 64 8z agents averaged 22.5 transactions each, according to Better Homes and Gardens.

Before he became a real estate broker, Hornung worked on the technology side for ZipRealty in the San Francisco area, after receiving an industrial engineering degree from Stanford University. ZipRealty was one of the first brokerage companies to put all listings information in front of online consumers.

The best practices and innovative strategies of independent companies identified as being Beta Brokerages will benefit the entire real estate industry, according to better Homes and Gardens.

?Our brand values the entrepreneurial spirit and idea sharing that will drive our industry into the future,? said Sherry Chris, president and CEO of Better Homes and Gardens.

?We salute these Beta Brokerages who challenge the status quo of real estate and value their willingness to share their revolutionary ideas so our industry as a whole can learn from them,? Chris said.

In selecting Beta Brokers, Better Homes and Gardens uses five key metrics:

  • New approaches to talent attraction.
  • Expert sourcing for local content.
  • Identifying and owning trends.
  • Implementation of sophisticated marketing and social media.

In addition to Hornung at 8z, other 2012 Beta Brokerages include:

  • ?Michael Meier, The Meier Group, New York.
  • Mark Mlakar and Dominic Morrocco, M Squared Realty, Washington, D.C.
  • Tiffany Combs, Climb Real Estate, San Francisco.
  • Jeff Burke, NuHabitat, Houston.
  • Greg Dallaire, Dallaire Realty, Green Bay, Wis.
  • Jeff Martel, 43 Degrees North Real Estate, Boise, Idaho.
  • Phillip Cantrell, Benchmark Realty, Nashville, Tenn.
