From birds to crustaceans, numerous animal species migrate each year to find more food, pleasant weather or the perfect place to breed. But at least one species ??a freshwater fish called the common roach ??migrates to avoid getting eaten, new research suggests.

Researchers used identifier tags to track the seasonal movements of the common roach (Rutilus rutilus) for four years. These fish live in freshwater lakes throughout Europe and are partially migratory ??that is, during winter, up to 80 percent of the fish migrate to nearby streams, while the rest stay put.

"It's a bit of an overwhelming sight to come across these streams in wintertime, and you suddenly realize that there are thousands upon thousands of fish in this restricting area," said lead researcher Christian Skov, a fish ecologist at the Technical University of Denmark.

Cormorant birds (Phalacrocorax carbo) are known to prey on roach living in both lakes and streams. However, 92.5 percent of the tags retrieved from cormorant pellets came from roach that last swam in lakes specifically, the researchers found. Moreover, the longer the fish stayed out of the lakes, the more likely they were to escape becoming bird food, suggesting that the fish reduce their predation risk from the birds by migrating into streams. Lakes vs. streams
The idea that some animals migrate to escape predation isn't new, but evidence for this behavior is hard to come by. In 2010, scientists discovered predation was partially involved in the breeding migrations of Arctic shorebirds: birds that traveled farther north were less likely to have their nests ravaged by foxes and other predators. But little other evidence for this kind of phenomena exists.

In the new study, Skov, along with colleagues from Sweden and Switzerland, attached passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags to more than 2,200 roach living in two lakes in Denmark. Every tag had a unique identifier code, allowing the team to distinguish each individual fish. At the inlets and outlets of each stream, the researchers set up antennas, which picked up signals from the PIT tags. "We knew the position of all of these tagged fish, allowing us to calculate how many days they spent in the stream and how much time they spent in the lake," Skov told LiveScience.

The researchers also knew cormorants roosted and bred near the lakes, while preying on roach, among other fish. With a device not so different from a minesweeper, they combed the cormorants' habitat, searching for tags that were pooped out. [The 10 Weirdest Animal Discoveries]

Analyzing the data from the tags, they saw a large variation in the amount of time the fish spent out of the lakes. Some fish spent five months in the streams, while others would visit the streams four or five times in a single winter. "But there was a consistent pattern," Skov said. "The longer (the fish) spent in the stream, the smaller their probability of predation."

For example, in 2008, small fish that stayed in Lake Loldrup the entire winter had about a 20 percent chance of getting eaten, but this probability dropped to about 10 percent if they stayed out of the lake for 100 days. Large roach (around 10 inches, or 25 centimeters, in length or more) showed the same trend, but overall were more likely to get eaten than small fish ??they had a 40 percent chance of being preyed upon if they stayed in Lake Loldrup for the full 2008 winter.

Interestingly, the choice to migrate wasn't risk free. During winter food becomes scarce in the lakes, but there's practically nothing to eat in the streams, Skov said.

Why some, but not all?
Given how much safer the streams appear to be during the chilly months, one can't help but wonder why some roach stay behind in the lakes. The researchers don't have the full picture yet, but their previous research has uncovered clues.

In one study they found that physically fit fish were more likely to migrate than those in poor physical condition. The researchers also found that the fish's personality matters, as bold fish?are more likely to migrate than shy fish. "So it's pretty complicated why some fish stay behind," Skov said.

Skov thinks the research will help scientists understand what drives migration and how different migrations evolve. "Here's support for one of the most underexplored ideas as to why animals migrate," he said, adding that he's interested in seeing how adaptive the roach's behavior is and if the fish would continue to migrate when there's no cormorant threat.

Future research may even show that other animals migrate to escape predators. "I could easily imagine that's the case," Skov said.

The research was detailed online Tuesday?in the journal Biology Letters.

85th Annual Academy Awards balance humor, sophistication | The ...

There?s just something about the Oscars.

Once a year, there is a three-hour-long snapshot in time ? okay, three and a?half, though I can?t even be mad about host Seth MacFarlane?s 17-minute opening this year ? during which the moviegoing public unites for one cause: critiquing films they most likely haven?t even seen yet. Or, in some extreme cases, films they?ve never heard of before (see: the entire Foreign Language Film category).?

It?s an interesting time in the world of cinema, a time when even the most passive pop culture consumer becomes a sudden expert on cinematography, costume design and sound mixing. We host viewing parties with our friends and fill out fake Oscar ballots; we start heated debates about the merits of Jessica Chastain?s performance in ?Zero Dark Thirty? versus that of Jennifer Lawrence in ?Silver Linings Playbook.? We overanalyze each acceptance speech down to the last syllable, and for one night only, we are all World?s Most Insightful Movie Critic.

But why?

The answer seems simple. It isn?t just the slight adrenaline rush that comes from correctly predicting the most winners (though it doesn?t hurt to earn bragging rights for the next 24 hours). It isn?t just the hilarity of a newly named Best Actress tripping on her way to the stage (nice save, Jennifer!). And it probably isn?t the newfound crush that even the most begrudging ?Family Guy? fan must have developed on Seth MacFarlane last night. That voice! Those jokes! The lack of a wedding ring!

It?s because, despite our differing opinions on the movies themselves, the Oscars have an innate ability to bring us together in our enjoyment of cinema.

Last night?s telecast was no different, featuring a little something for everyone. Well, okay, if you?re not a fan of show tunes or dancing, the ceremony probably had a little?too much of a certain something. But it was still a ceremony that tied generations together.

For those of us huddled in dorm rooms and apartments, putting off homework for this once-a-year event, the enjoyment came from seeing the voice of Peter Griffin dance alongside Harry Potter. For the viewers who?ve been watching the Oscars for decades, similar enjoyment came from Barbra Streisand?s stunning performance of ?The Way We Were? during the In Memoriam segment, as well as Daniel Day-Lewis? ability to crack a genuinely funny joke while accepting his award. Who knew Abraham Lincoln had such a quick wit?

It was a hybrid ceremony, one that could easily have been mistaken for the Grammys or Tonys at certain points along the way. Let?s make that an Oscars tradition, if it means Adele and Jennifer Hudson can come back and steal the show every year.

But for an awards show that has struggled to combine humor, youth, prestige and elegance for the last several years, the 85th annual Academy Awards were a resounding success.

At the very least ? even if Ang Lee?s Best Director win infuriated you and ?Argo??s Best Picture victory made you see red ? we all got a nice laugh out of hearing Russell Crowe sing.

Mars may still be habitable today, scientists say

LOS ANGELES ? While Mars was likely a more hospitable place in its wetter, warmer past, the Red Planet may still be capable of supporting microbial life today, some scientists say.

Ongoing research in Mars-like places such as Antarctica and Chile's Atacama Desert shows that microbes can eke out a living in extremely cold and dry environments, several researchers stressed at "The Present-Day Habitability of Mars" conference held here at the University of California Los Angeles this month.

And not all parts of the Red Planet's surface may be arid currently ? at least not all the time. Evidence is building that liquid water might flow seasonally at some Martian sites, potentially providing a haven for life as we know it.

"We certainly can't rule out the possibility that it's habitable today," said Alfred McEwen of the University of Arizona, principal investigator for the HiRise camera aboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft. [The Search for Life on Mars: A Photo Timeline]

Surface water on Mars?
McEwen discussed some intriguing observations by HiRise, which suggest that briny water may flow down steep Martian slopes during the local spring and summer.

Sixteen such sites have been identified to date, mostly on the slopes of the huge Valles Marineris canyon complex, McEwen said. The tracks seem to repeat seasonally as the syrupy fluids descend along weather-worn pathways.

While the brines may originate underground, Caltech's Edwin Kite noted, there is an increasing suspicion that a process known as deliquescence ? in which moisture present in the atmosphere is gathered by compounds on the ground, allowing it to become a liquid ? may be responsible.

Astrobiologists are keen to learn more about these brines, for not much is known about them at the moment.

"Briny water on Mars may or may not be habitable to microbes, either from Earth or from Mars," McEwen said.

Hardy microbes
Martian life may be able to survive even in places where water doesn't seep and flow, some scientists stressed.

For example, microbes here on Earth make a living in the Atacama and the dry valleys of Antarctica, both of which are extremely cold and arid, said Chris McKay of NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif.

Antarctic sites also receive seasonally high ultraviolet radiation doses thanks to a hole in the ozone layer that tends to develop every August through November. This provides yet another parallel to Mars, whose thin atmosphere and lack of a protective magnetic field make the planet more radiation-bombarded than Earth.

In the Antarctic dry valleys, McKay said, organisms dwell within rocks, just deep enough to be shielded from the worst of the UV but close enough to the surface to receive the benefits of photosynthesis. Something similar might be happening on Mars today, if life ever evolved there.

McKay also discussed deliquescence, which in the Atacama allows salts to gather enough water to support the existence of life.

McKay offered some advice to NASA's Mars rover Curiosity, which landed in August to determine whether Mars could ever have supported microbial life: "Watch for salt along the road!"

A possible energy source
A number of presenters spent some time talking about perchlorate, a chlorine-containing chemical that NASA's Phoenix lander spotted near the Martian north pole in 2008.

McKay and other researchers think perchlorate may be the reason that NASA's twin Viking landers didn't detect any organic compounds ? the carbon-containing building blocks of life as we know it ? on the Red Planet back in the 1970s.

The Vikings vaporized Martian soil and looked for any organics boiling off. They found nothing but a few chlorine compounds that were attributed to contamination. But after Phoenix's perchlorate find, McKay and some other researchers performed an experiment.

They added perchlorate to some desert dirt from Chile known to contain organics. They heated the soil up and found the same chlorine compounds the Vikings did, suggesting that organics may have been present in the Vikings' samples but were broken down by the combination of heat and perchlorate.

While this backstory is interesting in its own right, perchlorate is also relevant to the possible habitability of present-day Mars.

"Perchlorate, it turns out, is a potent chemoautotrophic energy source," said Carol Stoker, also of NASA Ames, noting that the chemical could potentially sustain microbes in the dark Martian subsurface, where photosynthesis is not an option.

And some Earth microbes use perchlorate for food, so that could be happening on Mars as well, scientists have pointed out.

"The Present-Day Habitability of Mars" took place Feb. 4-5 and was co-hosted by the NASA Astrobiology institute and the UK Center for Astrobiology. Archived videos of conference presentations are available here.

Alcatel One Touch Fire joins the Firefox OS cuddle party, we go hands-on (video)

ZTE may have had a head start in the Firefox OS race ahead of MWC, but Alcatel's also got something similar to ride on the waves of some "500 million Mozilla users." Suitably dubbed the One Touch Fire, this entry-level phone is basically a rehash of the budget One Touch T'Pop announced back at CES, packing a 3.5-inch HVGA TN display, a 1GHz processor, 256MB RAM, 512MB storage and a 3.2-megapixel camera. There are also the usual bunch of radios: WiFi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS, FM radio and UMTS 900/2100 and 850/1900/2100 (up to 7.2Mbps for download and 5.76Mbps for upload). Underneath the removable 1,400mAh battery you'll find a microSD slot that'll take anything up to 32GB (a 2GB card is included), as well as a slot for an old-school Mini-SIM card.

We got the chance to play with the Fire earlier today and while the glossy plastic body -- in either orange or pink -- felt solid enough, the performance wasn't quite there yet: the touch and software response were significantly sluggish, as you'll see in our hands-on video after the break. On the brighter side of things, the surprisingly large loudspeaker on the back produced some punchy bass, but don't expect too much from its audio quality. Alcatel has a few more months to grease up the phone before its June launch across Latin America and Europe, so we'll be able to give it a proper score then. Press release after the break.

Humanly speaking, clouds and the revolution of the earth would sometimes interrupt such activity, but those remarkable moments do point us toward deeper consideration of the role of reflection ? not sun-made or man-made, but God-made. At any time we are flawless reflectors, inseparable from our source, divine light, Truth. As the Apostle Paul wrote in the eighth chapter of his Epistle to the Romans: ?Nothing in all creation can separate us from God?s love for us? (verse 39, Contemporary English Version).

Mrs. Eddy explained further: ?Few there are who comprehend what Christian Science means by the word reflection. God is seen only in that which reflects good, Life, Truth, Love ? yea, which manifests all His attributes and power, even as the human likeness thrown upon the mirror repeats precisely the looks and actions of the object in front of it? (?Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896,? p. 23).

Our inseparability from our divine source was further clarified when Mrs. Eddy wrote that as images of Love we have not ?a single quality underived from Deity? and possess ?no life, intelligence, nor creative power of [our] own,? but reflect ?spiritually all that belongs to [our] Maker? Given the richness and abundance of God?s resources, just think of the scope we all have to live lives that stretch way beyond that analogy of sunlight on tall buildings. It?s our union with the Christ ? ?the spiritual idea of divine Love? (Science and Health, p. 38) ? that makes the difference. It allows us to mentally step inside God?s embrace and draw all those around us into the warmth and security of a permanently sunlit place.

Court lets stand Obama's China wind farm ban

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A federal judge said Friday she can't overturn President Barack Obama's decision to revoke a Chinese company's purchase of four wind farm projects in the vicinity of a U.S. naval facility's restricted airspace.

However, U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson said the Ralls Corporation has a right to a hearing over whether the White House should be forced to explain its decision.

In his September decision, Obama ordered Ralls Corporation, a company owned by Chinese nationals, to divest its interest in the wind farms it purchased earlier this year in Oregon. The wind farm sites are all in the vicinity of restricted air space near the Naval Weapons Systems Training Facility Boardman. The administration cites unspecified national security risks as the reason for blocking the transaction.

Ralls sued. Its CEO, Wu Jialiang, said in Beijing in October that his company would "never do anything that threatens U.S. national security."

Jackson said the federal courts don't have the power to get involved in the president's decision-making on this issue.

The law "is not the least bit ambiguous about the role of the courts: 'The actions of the president . . . and the findings of the president . . . shall not be subject to judicial review,'" she said.

However, Jackson said the courts can hold hearings on whether the government deprived Ralls of its property without due process of law. Ralls argued that the Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment entitles it to an opportunity to be heard and to hear the reasons for Obama's decision, she said.

"It is true that the finality provision will bar the court from hearing any attack on the president's findings," Jackson said. "But there is a difference between asking a court to decide whether one was entitled to know what the president's reasons were and asking a court to assess the sufficiency of those reasons."

Jackson said she will hear arguments on that issue later.

Should grandma join Facebook? It may give her a cognitive boost, study finds

Feb. 21, 2013 ? For older adults looking to sharpen their mental abilities, it might be time to log on to Facebook.

Preliminary research findings from the University of Arizona suggest that men and women older than 65 who learn to use Facebook could see a boost in cognitive function.

Janelle Wohltmann, a graduate student in the UA department of psychology, set out to see whether teaching older adults to use the popular social networking site could help improve their cognitive performance and make them feel more socially connected.

Her preliminary findings, which she shared this month at the International Neuropsychological Society Annual Meeting in Hawaii, show that older adults, after learning to use Facebook, performed about 25 percent better on tasks designed to measure their ability to continuously monitor and to quickly add or delete the contents of their working memory -- a function known in the psychology world as "updating."

Wohltmann, whose research is ongoing as part of her dissertation work, facilitated Facebook training for 14 older adults who had either never used the site or used it less than once a month. They were instructed to become Facebook friends only with those in their training group and were asked to post on the site at least once a day.

A second group of 14 non-Facebook using seniors instead was taught to use an online diary site, Penzu.com, in which entries are kept private, with no social sharing component. They were asked to make at least one entry a day, of no more than three to five sentences to emulate the shortness of messages that Facebook users typically post.

The study's third group of 14 was told they were on a "wait-list" for Facebook training, which they never actually completed.

Prior to learning any new technologies, study participants, who ranged in age from 68 to 91, completed a series of questionnaires and neuropsychological tests measuring social variables, such as their levels loneliness and social support, as well as their cognitive abilities. The assessments were done again at the end of the study, eight weeks later.

In the follow-ups, those who had learned to use Facebook performed about 25 percent better than they did at the start of the study on tasks designed to measure their mental updating abilities. Participants in the other groups saw no significant change in performance.

Wohltmann conducted the study with help from her research adviser Betty Glisky, professor and head of the department of psychology, and a team of undergraduate and graduate research assistants. It was based on existing evidence about how learning new tasks can help older adults with overall cognitive function, as well as research suggesting a possible link between social connectedness and cognitive performance.

"The idea evolved from two bodies of research," she said. "One, there is evidence to suggest that staying more cognitively engaged -- learning new skills, not just becoming a couch potato when you retire but staying active -- leads to better cognitive performing. It's kind of this 'use it or lose it' hypothesis."

"There's also a large body of literature showing that people who are more socially engaged, are less lonely, have more social support and are more socially integrated are also doing better cognitively in older age," she said.

In Wohltmann's research, further analysis is needed to determine whether using Facebook made participants feel less lonely or more socially connected, she said.

Likewise, further analysis is needed to determine whether, or by how much, Facebook's social aspect contributed to improvements in cognitive performance. However, Wohltmann suspects that the complex nature of the Facebook interface, compared to the online diary site, was largely responsible for Facebook users' improved performance.

"The Facebook interface is actually quite complex. The big difference between the online diary and Facebook is that when you create a diary entry, you create the entry, you save it and that's all you see, versus if you're on Facebook, several people are posting new things, so new information is constantly getting posted," she said.

"You're seeing this new information coming in, and you need to focus on the new information and get rid of the old information, or keep it in mind if you want to go back and reference it later, so you have to constantly update what's there in your attention," she said.

Participants in the study, who had an average age of 79, represent a demographic whose social media behavior has not been closely examined.

"Facebook is obviously a huge phenomenon in our culture," Wohltmann said. "There's starting to be more research coming out about how younger adults use Facebook and online social networking, but we really don't know very much at all about older adults, and they actually are quite a large growing demographic on Facebook, so I think it's really important to do the research to find out."

One in three online seniors use a social networking site like Facebook, according to the Pew Internet & American Life Project.

Wohltmann says she also sees Facebook as a potential alternative to some online games marketed to seniors to help boost mental acuity.

"Those games can boring after a while, and this might be a new activity for people to learn that's more interesting and keeps them socially engaged," she said, adding that it can also help older adults stay connected with grandchildren and other family and friends.

Yet, Wohltmann cautions it may not be for everyone.

"One of the take-home messages could be that learning how to use Facebook is a way to build what we call cognitive reserve, to help protect against and stave off cognitive decline due to normal age-related changes in brain function. But there certainly are other ways to do this as well," she said.

"It's also important to understand and know about some of the aspects of Facebook that people have concerns about, like how to keep your profile secure," she said. "So I wouldn't suggest to anyone to get out and get Granny online right away, unless you or somebody else can provide the proper education and support to that person, so that they can use it in a safe way."

Chromebook Pixel to have integrated Quickoffice, able to open docs natively

While the Chromebook Pixel has that pretty display for looking at pictures and browsing the web, many users would probably still want to use the laptop for, like, actual work. Thankfully the Chrome team has thought of that and have developed an integrated version of Quickoffice so that you can finally open and edit office documents natively within the Chrome browser. The final app will take two to three months to ship, but that office functionality will be built-in with the Pixel (update: we've clarified this statement below). Sundar Pichai, senior vice president of Chrome, said at the Chromebook Pixel event in San Francisco that this "completes the story for a lot of users" who want something a little more beyond just Google Docs. We've also learned that while the Quickoffice integration will be available initially for the Pixel, it'll eventually roll out to other Chromebooks as well via a software update.

Update: To clarify, we've learned that all Pixels will ship with Quickoffice already installed. You'll be able to open and view documents on it as soon as you get it. However, the ability to actually edit those docs won't be available until two to three months down the line as they're still working on perfecting the app (the demo they had at the event failed a couple of times).

The next German Unity Day on October 3, 2013, will see a grand namaz prayer in the former Lutheran church of Kapernaumkirche in Hamburg as a further sign of integration of local Muslims into the German and European society.

It?s not the first instance of Hamburg?s surprising religious tolerance. Earlier, many eyebrows were raised at the news that the Nour Islamic Center religious society bought a Hamburg Lutheran church.

The deal became possible because the number of parishioners had slumped dramatically in recent years. No one actually needed the church any more. Even so, some media outlets have questioned the legality of the deal.

Daniel Abdin, the press secretary of the Hamburg Islamic Community, complained to the Voice of Russia that in the past couple of years the German mass media had been deliberately portraying Muslims in a sharply negative way. ?We have never sought to occupy a church.

That was?not our purpose. For 20 years we?ve been praying in an underground garage, and for 8 years we?ve been looking for a prayer house. I understand the fears that stem from a lack of ties with Muslims. And I think that our task is to promote dialogue. The church in question is half-ruined, but it will be fully restored to its original architecture as a church monument protected by the state?.

The church has been closed since 2002, yet it remains a religious symbol and is perceived by people as a Christian temple, said Matthias Bechert of the Evangelical Church of Germany. The building?s owner sold it earlier this year without notifying the Evangelical church of Hamburg, he explained to the Voice of Russia.

?In 2004-2005, we could not even imagine the building ever being resold, least of all to a non-Christian organization. There is intensive interreligious dialogue in Hamburg. We support our Muslim colleagues in their desire to openly profess their religion. But we should mark the differences. And though we find it is extremely unpleasant, the situation is?the way it is?.

According to German media, at least 800 churches have been closed across the country since 1990. And though not all of them have been turned into mosques, the trend is obvious. In neighboring France, things are pretty much the same with Christian clerics ringing alarm as more and more people quit the traditional European faith.

Roman Silantyev, an assistant professor at the Literary University of Moscow, believes that what?s happening in Hamburg and other German cities attests to a kind of symbolic collapse of Western Christianity: once the most progressive faith claiming global domination, it is now ceding ground without a fight.

It looks like Europe is casting aside Christian values. But contrary to the expectations of nonbelievers, it is Islam and not secular or atheistic ideas that steps in to fill the niche.

'Suck It, Traditional TV': How We're Going To ... - Business Insider

By now many of you know the?Harlem Shake?but what you may not appreciate is the broader trend behind the video and it?has mirrored my general views on how TV will work in the future.

"Harlem Shake" is a YouTube phenomenon that, in just 2 weeks, has gone from nothing to on air on both?Jon Stewart?&?Stephen Colbert. Collectively the Harlem Shake has been viewed around 200 million times. Two weeks. 200 million views. Suck it, traditional TV.

Summary Version
Global audiences of prosumer video producers will create content that is viewed by global audiences in numbers far in excess of traditional TV. TV will enter the era of ?participation? which is a much more important trend than ?social video? even if it seems less sexy or less fundable.

It means the ?torso TV? consumption patterns will be more important than the head or the long tail for the next era of media companies.

TV of the future will not always have linear stories. I know that?s hard for many people to accept but when the medium changes from one-way broadcast to the millions to the ability to interact with each other through video it is unlikely that the future will resemble the past. Why would it?

I have started thinking about what the future might look like and I?ve started imagining what I call, ?MMOV? or massive multiplayer online video.

Sure, the revenue & margin will be significantly lower than traditional TV. ?You should only worry about this if you?re a large, traditional media company with fat margins. The future of TV will follow the rule of?Deflationary Economics?as I outline influenced by the book?The Innovator?s Dilemma.

It will enable the naturally creative but geographically and socially disenfranchised to make money doing what they love ? participating. Maybe small amounts of money for what founders reading these pages dream of but life-changing for many.

Gangnam Style Meets Torso TV
Of course you know?Gangnam Style, which is now the most viewed video in history at 1.3 billion views. Before this South Korean wonder spread across the globe I had written about a trend in global audiences that exists when the costs of production are nearly zero and the costs of distribution are also nearly free. I called this trend ?Torso TV? because the ?head? of consumption (largest number of views) was dominated by platforms that had massive distribution (think TV stations, radio or retail outlets that sell CDs and DVDs. think Apple. think Amazon) and therefore hits with high production costs were more suited to the medium.

The problem with the ?long tail? content is that only the platform provider (ie YouTube) makes money. So if you want to be a content producer and want to make money you can develop content for global ?niches? of watchers who might like: Japanese Anime, South Korean drama, Bollywood productions, reality TV on any topic ? fashion, cooking, travel.

I saw this trend with the growth of companies such as Viki, Drama Fever, Crunchyroll and the like. Global niches that turn out to be much larger than you?d imagine.

Gangnam Style is the manifestation of this trend which turned what should have likely been a medium size global audience into an global phenomenon like we?ve never seen.The Macarena?on steroids. Every now and again you can strike lightning in a bottle. Who knows why hits turn into memes? But it shows that when content is unleashed we can all appreciate it no matter of the country of origin.

Harlem Shake
For those who still don?t know the origins, the Harlem Shake?started as a small skit from a YouTuber named Filthy Frank?(10 million views as of this writing) on January 30, 2013. It was then popularized into an Internet meme 3 days later by text?an Australian group of guys called Sunny Coast Shake??in what garnered about 300,000 views in a short period of time (now at 11.3 million views).

But then the Harlem Shake went batshit crazy when?Vernon Shaw?of?Maker Studios?saw the video on Reddit and suggested that Maker should, well,?make?a video of the Harlem Shake in an office environment. That video is?the most viewed Harlem Shake?(with more than 15 million views as of today). It was loaded on the channel of?Hi I?m Rawn, a long-time YouTuber.

At 12.30pm in the afternoon the idea to create the video was hatched. They taped it at 3.30pm for 2 minutes. 1 take. Then back to work, people!

It was uploaded at around 4pm.

Maker?s talent started commenting on it and sharing it.?ShayCarl?(a Maker Studios co-founder) in particular. And then ?

Boom.

It made national news. Maker was contacted by every major news outlet. And suddenly every office in the country was doing their own version of the Harlem Shake.

And here?s the thing. This is not Gangnam Style, a catchy tune?consumed?by billions.

This is Harlem Shake, a catchy tune?produced?by tens of thousands. As of this writing nearly 50,000 versions have been created and uploaded and watched by some 200,000,000 people. Yes. Two followed by eight zeros.

It is the production angle that is most fascinating to me and the biggest unspotted trend by most venture capitalists and traditional media executives.

I have?been talking about the battle for the living room for years?and then followed up with?Why the TV Market is Ready for Disruption?with a more recent?discussion about Hollywood vs. Silicon Valley here?(the video version?with an LA interview that can be viewed here?and then a subsequent session?in NYC with Jon Miller which can be viewed here).

And I?ve opined on?why the traditional media companies aren?t well poised to win at this new TV world. and?again here.

So here?s the thing

The Broader Trend
While way too many startup companies (and investors) are focused on ?social TV? or on ?Instagram for TV? I believe they are missing the more fundamental shift in our industry.

There is a world filled with professional producers of video content who are extraordinarily talented but lack access to Hollywood. In fact,?that?s how Maker Studios got started in the first place.

I first wanted to invest in this trend by backing a company called?Filmaka. I didn?t end up investing but I always loved the concept. They help find talented film makers globally, enter them into competitions and advance the best of them toward winners that get to produce full-length films. Filmaka is the creation of?Deepak Nayar?who is the producer of films such as Buena Vista Social Club and Bend it Like Beckham.

But when you think about the movement we once called ?Web 2.0? it was the recognition of the fact that media doesn?t only want to flow one way.

Media in an age of:

• low-cost capture from mobile devices
• cheap post-production process by tools (think?Pro Tools?for audio, Instagram filters)
• cheap local storage (without which media creation is not possible)
• available bandwidth for uploading (which is assumed away as easy but only in recent years has been solved. most Internet connections have been asymmetric & optimized for downloads)
• cheap or free cloud storage (YouTube, DropBox, Facebook)
• easy sharing (through social networks or platforms like YouTube)

means specifically one thing. People are going to want to participate. Participation. We are the media. We want to be in it. Create it. Take part in it. Have a say, a vote. Think American Idol voting, where the audience gets to feel like they?re participating. And where they?re willing to pay by dialing a paid number to feel like they?re, well, participating.

And the end of the Maker Studios show,?Epic Rap Battles of History, the end the show ways ?Who won, you decide?? where the audience gets to weigh in. Participation. At whatever level.

Serialized TV with Audience Participation
I?ve been thinking a lot about what I want to fund in the video creation world. One idea I?ve been searching for is a platform that enables the creation of serialized programs with audience participation.

And this is a concept that has been at work?since at least the 17th century. An example of a great serialist was Charles Dickens?in which Oliver Twist & Nicholas Nickleby and others were written and distributed serially.

?The installment format allowed Dickens to evaluate his audience?s reaction, and he often modified his plot and character development based on such feedback?

I have talked to several YouTuber?s about my idea but haven?t yet gotten any takers.

Here?s what I imagine. You create a narrative episodic show and do the first four episodes to get the story arc and characters going. On the fifth episode the audience gets to create it?s version of the next show. You look at submissions and pick the best one. You reshoot that episode with a higher budget and your original cast but that producer now gets a financial take in the show or gets to participate in the production or whatever. Then you move on to the sixth show with new submissions.

You need to build a platform that allows submissions, workflow, multiple story flows, awards, producer profiles and the like. It can?t just be videos on YouTube but I?ll be that YouTube is the distribution platform.

Here?s the thing ? if well done I think you could see the Harlem Shake effect where many people want to have a go at participating on the production. Most won?t be of the quality that you want but you now have tons of material and inspiration for your show and you own all of the submitted IP. You share financial results and/or fame as the incentive to participate. It?s American Idol for makers.

The first time you do it the participation will be light. The next time you?ll get more. And the fan producers all help market your show because they too want the attention. Whether they are selected or not! I repeat ? free marketing. Done by the masses.

And finally you could stitch together multiple narratives or versions of shows for people who WANT to watch all of the derivative shows. Your costs of production of these additional versions ? zero.

To all of the traditional TV people who keep telling me this ?low cost, low quality YouTube content will eventually go away. The production quality is terrible? I say, ?Please study The Innovator?s Dilemma?because it predicts the disruption of your industry presciently.? Let me remind you of the math: Gangnam Style = 1.3 billion views. Each episode of?Epic Rap Battles of History?gets between 30,000,000 ? 75,000,000 views.

And to those who keep telling me that the CPMs are too low to make a business please stop thinking about two-way entertainment in only CPM terms. ?There are many more ways to monetize an audience of fans that simply pre-roll ads.

Think creatively. Study the video game industry. The music industry. Your world is changing, too. And you have so many examples from which to build your future that you have no excuse to put your head in the sand.

MMOV
The other theme I?ve been playing around with in my head (and in the numerous debates with media execs who aspire to do startups) I?ve started calling MMOV.

It?s a play on?MMOG?(massive multiplayer online games, think?World of Warcraft).

What exactly is World of Warcraft?

It?s entertainment. With rich graphics and characters. It has a story, a world, that unfolds. It has interaction with other players. It is ? by definition ? participation. It exists precisely because there is a network. I grew up in the era where we got to play video games alone. I was?inspired by Zork. It was a computer challenging my imagination and crying out for logic and participation. It was text-based. And anything but MM or O. But it scratched the same need ? participation. Engagement.

And when the O is attached and thus other humans are on the other end of your game and when graphics are professional it is the ultimate in computer entertainment with other human beings letting young people all over the world who feel disconnected from other human beings form friendships.

I once heard a father describe how his son played World of Warcraft. He said this to me, which formed an impression, ?My son leaves World of Warcraft to play other video games with his friends. But then they always come back to World of Warcraft to talk about it with their friends. WoW is their home base.?

So WoW in a way is his son?s social network.

I imagine MMOV this way.

You start out watching video. And this might be humans but it might also be animation. It might feel like TV or might feel like an animated video game or maybe there is no difference? You start watching with friends, peers or strangers ? who might become friends or peers in the future (think that?s weird? check your Twitter stream. It?s filled with people like this. Aren?t all online communities like this?).

You watch the first ?episode? together. Then you discuss it with those in the room with you. They are watching it?synchronously. It is your job to get them watch the next video based on plot or character development you want to see. Which way do you go next? The audience decides.

And the show develops like this. No linearity. Only the evolution through a video game board with other players trying to agree how the story unfolds. Maybe for a fee you get to choose your own direction without the crowd?

Don?t like how Homeland has become a total farce like 24? Chart a different path. Don?t like that a characters in Downton Abbey gets killed or another might get banished from employment? Chart a different course.

In an online world, why wouldn?t we?

Television today is being charted by those who grew up in a one-way world of: we decide, we write, we broadcast. Doesn?t that sound like the websites of yore that implored us to read their stories?

We have too much evidence from the text-based Internet that this model doesn?t hold in an online world.

Think Zork. It?s how things were. Then think World of Warcraft. It?s how things will be. It?s why we use Twitter, Facebook, Instagram. To be part of a conversation. And even if it?s only very occasionally that you want to chime in,?it?s why UGC works. 1/9/90.

Online Events
Finally, I?m fascinated with the future of live events. We?ve only just scratched the surface. As you now know?8 million people tuned in to watch Felix Baumgartner jump from 24 miles above the Earth?in a Red Bull capsule.

It will always be a milestone in the Internet, YouTube, Twitter, Mobile world etched in my memory. And that of my two boys.

Like many of you we were laying around watching NFL football games. And also paying attention to the Twitter. Watching only is so one-way. With our second screen we suddenly have ? participation.

And that?s where I first saw it. I know many of you knew the Felix was going to jump. I hadn?t been paying attention.

But Twitter cried out that I MUST! Tune in. NOW. As only Twitter can dictate.

So on my iPhone I clicked on a link and saw Felix going up. WTF? What is that guy doing?

I called my boys over. We sat transfixed to my iPhone. Was he really jumping from outer space? Is this real? Is this really live? Did I just click on a button and watch a man prepared to jump from that little capsule watching real-time streaming from my mobile device that I only knew about because random people (some of whom I?ve never met in real life) demanded that I do so on Twitter?

I was sincerely amazed by all of those things. And we watched. And watched. And watched. And the NFL seemed so uninteresting at that moment. I?ll never remember who was playing or who won (probably not the Eagles).

But along with 8 million people globally we shared a moment. And then?another 32 million people (at least) watched on YouTube afterward.

That fascinates me. Twitter. YouTube. Mobile. Live. Watch this space. It?s going to form a larger part of our future.
