Micromax's Superfone A50 Ninja enters India with AISHA voice assistant, forgets its shuriken

Micromax's A50 Superfone Ninja enters India with AISHA voice assistant, forgets its shuriken

Hoping to compete with the Siris of the world, Micromax has announced its new Superfone A50 Ninja alongside a novel feature dubbed AISHA -- which is short for Artificial Intelligence Speech Handset Assistant. Similar to Cupertino's personal secretary, AISHA vows to help folks with every-day elements such as making calls, setting up calendar events and even reporting what the weather looks like. Much to our disappointment, however, the A50 Ninja runs a not-so-new flavor of Android -- Gingerbread to be exact -- and Micromax left out any mention of Android 4.0. On the specs front, the dual-SIM Superfone sports a 3.1-inch display (mum's the word on the resolution), a two-megapixel shooter, Bluetooth 2.0 capabilities and an unspecified 650MHz processor. All in all, thanks to its 4,999 rupees (around $95) budget price, we can't imagine you'd complain too much. Be sure to hit up the Micromax link below if you're interested in grabbing one of these.

Bobby Brown Pleads Out DUI Arrest

Bobby Brown has reached a deal with prosecutors that will keep the singer out of jail.

Bobby at Whitney's Funeral

As first reported by TMZ, Brown pleaded "no contest" today to one charge of driving with a blood alcohol content over .08, stemming from an incident in late March when cops pulled him over for driving erratically.

In exchange, attorneys dropped the DUI count and Brown was sentenced to 36 months of probation and one day he's already served in county prison.

The artist has been in the news far more than anyone would like since the tragic death of his ex-wife, Whitney Houston. Brown made the wrong kind of headlines for leaving her funeral early, and insiders claim he's considering a memoir about his marriage to the legend.

Could Justin Bieber Perform With An Elvis Hologram?

The creators of Tupac's Coachella hologram reveal other artists they'd like to bring back to life: Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Michael Jackson.
By Jocelyn Vena

The world can't seem to get enough of that Tupac hologram from the Coachella festival. The late rapper's lifelike image left fans in awe as it performed alongside Snoop Dogg during his set with Dr. Dre.

The people behind the projection system that created the incredibly realistic likeness of the MC are now cooking up ideas of who else they might want to bring back to life.

Speaking to NME, Sanj Surati, head of music at Musion Technology Ltd, explained that one of music's greats could one day perform alongside one of pop's biggest stars. Asked whether there were plans to bring back Elvis Presley and perhaps have him perform next to Justin Bieber, Surati said it "would be a cool thing."

If an Elvis/Bieber collabo can't shake out, Surati explained there are others he'd like to see come to life: "Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, oh, and Michael Jackson would be the ultimate one," he said. "Maybe even Whitney Houston."

As for the future of the famous Tupac-ogram, well, Surati hopes it can be resurrected once again on a bigger-scale tour. "This is obviously a historic and exciting initiative that we're all witnessing currently, and it would make sense for them to bring it to Europe," he said. "And maybe take it to the rest of the world."

Since the debut of the Tupac hologram, fans have been wondering what other beloved performers could find new life using this technology. On the 10-year anniversary of Left Eye's death, there was an unconfirmed report from TMZ that TLC might bring back the group's sassy rapper for a "massive 2012 reunion tour." The group has yet to comment on the rumor.

Which artist would you like to see brought back to life as a hologram? Sound off below!

NASA READIs early detection GPS network, aids first responders with earthquake warnings

Image

After tacking space shuttle Discovery onto the back of a 747, the brainy gang over at NASA's READI for a new challenge -- earthquake detection. The agency's GPS-monitoring system, known as the Real-time Earthquake Analysis for Disaster Mitigation Network, is being tested with the goal of more accurately detecting the scale of quakes and, consequently, getting tsunami warnings out as soon as possible. The setup, made possible by a partnership between the Department of Defense, the National Space Foundation, and the United States Geological Survey, works by measuring ground displacement in real-time to provide a faster, more detailed assessment of imminent damage, thereby giving first responders a head start on determining aid. So the next time you look up to the night sky and wish upon a tracking star, keep in mind that sometimes privacy-skewing, positioning tech could just save your life.

Barca struggling ahead of must-win Chelsea match

By JOSEPH WILSON

updated 6:07 p.m. ET April 23, 2012

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -Still recovering from a morale-busting loss at home in the Spanish league, Barcelona will need to quickly regroup to beat Chelsea and overturn a first leg deficit in the Champions League semifinals.

The defending champions in both Spain and Europe lost to Real Madrid 2-1 on Saturday and now trail their biggest rivals by seven points with four games to go. Last week, the Catalan team lost at Chelsea 1-0 in the first leg of the Champions League semifinals.

Barcelona could lose three straight matches for the first time since 2003, staining a season in which it has already won the Spanish Super Cup, European Super Cup and Club World Cup. The team is also in the Copa del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao.

"It's very easy to speak about the end of a cycle but I think this team, which has won 13 titles in three years, deserves a lot of credit despite losing one game," Barcelona defender Gerard Pique said on Monday. "Others have to win the titles first before we start talking about a changing of the guard. We deserve more respect than that."

Chelsea is unbeaten in its last six meetings with Barcelona, but goalkeeper Petr Cech said the Spanish team's recent stumbles won't make it any easier.

"I don't think that them losing the 'clasico' will have a big impact," said Cech. "(Barcelona) is a great team with the experience to handle defeats. It will make them eager to forget about the 'clasico' and focus on the Champions League."

Messi was bottled up by both Chelsea and Madrid to remain scoreless in his last two outings, and when he did manage to set up his teammates, they failed to finish.

Against Madrid, the three-time world player of the year didn't even manage a shot on goal, something almost unimaginable for the club's all-time leading scorer who already has 63 goals this season.

Messi did not practice on Sunday due to a stomach ache but Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said it was nothing serious and defended his star player in the midst of a rare two-game scoring drought.

"I can never be worried about Messi, even if he goes 27 games without scoring a goal," said Guardiola. "One day he scores three goals, the next day he gives assists and creates chances. We have to give him permission not to score.

"Of course he likes to score. He feels responsible for his part in our attack. His leading role has helped us achieve all we have. It is never easy against a team that puts nine or 10 players near the area."

Guardiola's hesitance to renew his contract which expires in the offseason has only added to the growing tension surrounding the game.

But the former Barcelona midfielder said that Tuesday's outcome would "have absolutely nothing" to do with his decision whether to stay.

Chelsea will likely repeat its defensive tactics in an attempt to stop Messi. Even so, the visitors know that they will most likely need to score to go through.

"I hope that we are going to score a goal because a goal will be a big difference. We know from last time when the goal by (Andre) Iniesta made a big difference," Cech said, referring to Iniesta's stoppage-time goal that enabled Barcelona to get past Chelsea in the semifinals in 2008-09 on its way to winning the final.

While Barcelona generated more than enough chances against Chelsea to draw or even win the first leg, it was uncharacteristically sluggish and predictable against Madrid with playmakers Iniesta and Xavi not their usual sharp selves.

"To blame fatigue for defeats is an excuse for losers," said Pique, the Spain international who is looking to return to the lineup after missing the two losses. "When you talk about getting to a Champions League final the word fatigue doesn't exist. Everything is in our hands."

Guardiola can count on Cesc Fabregas and Pique to be fresh after neither played a minute against Madrid.

Pique could play a critical role by starting Barcelona's attacks with his long passing from the back.

Interim manager Roberto Di Matteo said his defensive formation gave Chelsea the best chance to come out on top.

"I think you have to utilize the strength of your players and look for the weakness of your opponent, that is tactics," Di Matteo said. "Barca will create chances against every team, so we will have to try and score a goal tomorrow night. But we also have to try and limit the chances they have against us."

Chelsea arrives in better physical form after resting most of its starters over the weekend. Striker Didier Drogba, who scored from Chelsea's only shot on goal in the first leg, is the team's only major doubt as he tries to recover from a knee injury.

"The game will be similar (to the first leg)," Guardiola said. "They will wait for us to loose the ball so they can attack on the break. Our biggest defensive goal is to be protected at these moments."

The winner will face either Bayern Munich or Madrid in the final on May 19. Madrid hosts the German side on Wednesday looking to come back from a 2-1 loss in the first leg.

Stakes high for United-City derby

The stakes have never been so high for a Manchester derby. United was in control of its own destiny until Sunday's 4-4 draw against Everton tipped the balance toward City, which can now win a first championship since 1968 if it wins its three remaining games.

Can we use Twitter to #SolvePT | PT Think Tank

Recently, a new hash tag has emerged in the physical therapy twittersphere:?#SolvePT.?Selena, via the Evidence in Motion Blog, shared her thoughts in a post The Pulse of Physical Therapy.?Dr. E of the Manual Therapist also briefly highlighted this new hash tag in a post.

Initially, discussions focused on financial issues of physician owned physical therapy services (POPTS), student loans, payment, and educational costs. But, today involvement and content was rich with various contributors and topics. Physical Therapist Twitter regulars such as myself (@Dr_Ridge_DPT), Larry Benz (@PhysicalTherapy) and @SnippetPhysTher?were present. @PTThinkTank even tweeted a few insights. Other tweeps included:

Topics discussed today were extremely broad and covered many areas of practice:

  • Education:?Cost,?Length,?Effectiveness, Organization
  • Clinical Education: Models, Need for change, Payment
  • Financial: Debt vs. Income, Payment by Setting, Incentives, Payment Models
  • Best Practice:?Defining, measuring, incentivizing, and teaching
  • Outcomes: Which ones? How to Measure?
  • Value: Cost Savings, How to measure, How to communicate

A very interesting question that I took from the discussion was: Who is the physical therapy consumer or customer??I made the point that physical therapy has many consumers at various levels of the care delivery process. An individual receiving care from a physical therapist is an obvious and direct consumer. But, other customers of our services include referral sources, other health care providers, payers, hospitals, entities we work for, the health care system, and society as a whole. Our care, but also our knowledge or advocacy, can directly or indirectly affect these various stake holders.

Web 2.0 principles allow us to crowd source and brainstorm with a much wider audience; geographically, practice setting, and expertise. This hashtag will allow for the recording and analysis of a wide range of view points and ideas. We can follow the evolution of topics over time. This stream and ?medium could be leveraged by larger, more formal organizations (are you listening APTA?)?for idea generation ?to guide future task forces and initiatives. In fact, some of the issues, solutions, and thoughts for future direction are solid. #SolvePT is already evolving into a task force.

There was a lot of focus on ?best practices? in physical therapy. Defining, measuring, communicating, and then teaching best practices is extremely challenging. Todd Davenport of @PacificDPTweet, made the observation that ?best practice? is a moving target given the evolution of research, science, and understanding. I agree. Further, who defines best practice? I think we must look beyond a specific patient and episode of care when defining, analyzing, and teaching best practice. In addition, we must look at multi-level outcomes. For example, for an outpatient perspective we can not just look at the patient specific outcome of that episode of care, the time/number of visits, and it?s cost. That is a too narrowly focused frame of reference. We should broaden our lens, and our potential for impact. We need to also need to consider (and target?) recurrence, future health care costs, risk reduction for other medical conditions, and overall health/fitness. Cardiopulmonary fitness is maybe the most dramatic modifiable factor to prevent disease, morbidity, and mortality.

I brought up the topic of physical therapists in hospital intensive care units. Johns Hopkins performed a quality improvement project where they staffed 1 physical therapist for a 16 bed medical ICU. Their estimation is that by decreasing ICU length of stay and increasing patient mobility/function the hospital, and thus the health care system, saved an estimated 5 million dollars over a 1 year period. The internal investigation lead to the hospital staffing 2.2 full time physical therapists solely in a 16 bed medical ICU. This is a dramatic change in practice focused not on productivity or reimbursement, but on VALUE, risk reduction, and other broader outcomes.

Unfortunately, in discussing best practice no attention was brought to the actual content of current PT programs. In my opinion, pain science/physiology, basic neuroscience, critical thinking, philosophy of science, cognitive biases, and metacognition are vastly lacking from our curriculums.

The teaching and study of pain should be integral in all PT education, both didactic and clinical. We have neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, and or medicine tracks in our programs. Why do we not have a specific pain track? Or, at least a focus and integration of neuroscience and pain physiology into our other courses? Regardless of practice setting, the majority of our patients will have a primary or secondary complaint of pain. Joe Brence, who blogs at ForwardThinkingPT, started an online petition regarding this exact topic. I recommend you sign it HERE.

In order to be ?evidence based? (or more accurately Science Based) we need extensive training in the philosophy of science and critical thinking including prior plausibility, research design, and article analyses. To assume that students entering PT programs received such instruction as undergraduates is, to put it nicely, a huge assumption. How are we to make appropriate clinical decisions if we do not understand our inherent cognitive traps and biases? How are we to correct them, if we can not even recognize them? The skill of appropriately analyzing a single article based on design, statistics, and results in the context of plausibility, basic science, and the state of other literature AND THEN applying that to everyday clinical practice is what being a master clinician-scientist is all about. And, that is what we need to strive for. The title of Tamara Little and Todd Davenport?s recent editorial in the Journal of Manual & Manipulative Therapy sums it up quite nicely: Should we be expert clinicians or scholars? The answer is yes.

  1. How do you think we should #solvePT?
  2. What are the most pressing issues in education, payment, practice, and our evolution?
  3. How can we focus some of the general issues and proposed ideas into specific and concrete action; solutions!?

#SolvePT has been thought provoking. Hopefully, it will continue to grow. I foresee big potential in this type of interaction.

Record Store Day: earth's vinyl days

On?April 21,?the fifth annual?Record Store Day?will get off to a rockin' start when doors open in about 1,000 record stores in some 20 countries.

You remember records, right? Not only are the big 12-inch albums and 7-inch 45s still among us, but so are their landlords, old-fashioned independent record stores, which celebrate their own special day every spring. On April 21, the fifth annual Record Store Day will get off to a rockin' start when doors open in about 1,000 record stores in some 20 countries.

From Tulsa to Tokyo, San Diego to Sydney, the gritty neighborhood purveyors of the petroleum platter will party with contests, free giveaways, in-store performances by local faves and big stars, and exclusive limited-edition 45 and LP releases. Among those are new singles by Coldplay, Florence + the Machine, Bruce Springsteen, Arcade Fire, comedian Jimmy Fallon, and many more. Exclusive Record Store Day LPs will include new 12-inch vinyl pressings from Grace Potter and the Nocturnals and The Black Keys, and rarities from jazz icons Miles Davis and Dave Brubeck.

Billboard magazine attributed a seismic 182,000 unit sales to last April's Record Store Day. Rocker Jack White exhorts the rock troops to "show respect for the tangible music that you've dedicated your careers and lives to, and help It from becoming nothing more than disposable digital data."

And speaking of analog, music producer Gary Calamar and Billboard writer Phil Gallo have penned a 240-page companion piece to the annual event, Record Store Days: From Vinyl to Digital and Back Again. It combines a timeline of the evolution of recording media ? from Edison's wax cylinders to today's MP3 files ? with affectionate portraits and reminiscences of America's iconic record shops and chains, some now defunct, some just plain funky. We meet up in the listening booth at Hollywood's long-gone Wallich's Music City to spin the latest from Nat King Cole and Elvis Presley before skipping a half century ahead to pack in like sardines with adoring fans at an in-store performance by Sir Paul McCartney at Amoeba Music, the largest record store in the world. (It's also known as "Godzilla" by the scores of indie record stores it has driven out of business.)

Dusty Groove of Chicago, Denver's Twist & Shout, Grimey's of Nashville, and Minneapolis's Electric Fetus won't hold out forever. Make a pilgrimage April 21 and pay your respects. To locate an indie record store near you, go to www.recordstoreday.com/Venues.

Nokia N900 rises from the grave, replaces robot's head

Image

Nokia's buried-but-beloved N900 smartphone has performed many parlor tricks in the past, but its latest role as a carbon-fiber swaddled cyborg cranium just might take the cake. Using the equally forsaken MeeGo OS, a roboticist by the name of Sascha hacked his way into the phone's three-axis controller and other components in order to bring his Bioloid creation to life. The smartphone's video streaming and remote access functions may also give this bipedal mech a leg-up on the last N900 robo we admired -- but we'll need to see some video of it all in action before we make that call. Meanwhile, let's just hope that this unholy union of rejected parts doesn't become self-aware and turn on the company that cast it away.
