Bucks trade Jackson, Bogut to Warriors for Ellis

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? The Milwaukee Bucks traded Andrew Bogut and Stephen Jackson to the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night for a three-player package headed by high-scoring guard Monta Ellis.

The Bucks also receive forward Ekpe Udoh and center Kwame Brown in the deal.

The trade represents a parting of ways between the Bucks and Bogut, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft who has struggled with injuries. It also allows the Bucks to rid themselves of Jackson, who had fallen out of favor with coach Scott Skiles and now gets to rejoin his former team.

For the Warriors, the trade breaks up the small backcourt of Ellis and Stephen Curry and brings in the type of big man the franchise has been seeking for years.

"We're extremely excited to acquire a player the caliber of Andrew Bogut, who we think is certainly one of the top centers in the NBA," general manager Larry Riley said. "He will add an element of toughness to our team and will provide us with scoring, rebounding and a defensive presence in the middle. We've lacked those elements in recent years and think that Andrew's addition will be a key factor in the growth of our team."

Ellis and Udoh left the team before Golden State's 115-89 win at Sacramento. The deal, first reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, was confirmed shortly after the game ended.

The players won't be separated from their respective former teams for very long, as the Warriors host the Bucks on Friday night.

Bogut fractured his left ankle Jan. 25 against Houston when he landed awkwardly, and it's not clear if he'll be able to return this season. The original timetable for his recovery was eight to 12 weeks. It's one of several significant injuries that have plagued the Australian center throughout his career.

Bogut missed the end of the 2009-10 season when he dislocated his right elbow, sprained his right wrist and broke his right hand in a hard fall to the floor. The injury bothered him for much of last season.

Bogut also missed significant time with an injured lower back in the 2008-09 season.

When Bogut has played, he has played well. In 408 career games, he is averaging 12.7 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.6 blocked shots.

The Bucks struggled in February without Bogut, but have won four of their last five to chase down the struggling New York Knicks in a race for what would be the No. 8 playoff seed in the Eastern Conference.

Jackson, meanwhile, hasn't played since Feb. 19, recently sitting out with what the team has described as a hamstring injury. Skiles benched him for a game in January after he missed a shootaround, he was suspended one game by the NBA for verbally abusing an official and his playing time has been limited ever since.

The deal brings the enigmatic "Captain Jack" back to the Bay Area. He helped lead the team's only playoff run since 1994, a surprising trip to the second round in 2007. In October 2009, the disgruntled Golden State star asked to relinquish his captain title during a meeting with Riley and then-Warriors coach Don Nelson. He was traded to Charlotte the next month.

Ellis has been the Warriors' main offensive threat, averaging 21.9 points. But Golden State struggled to win with the backcourt tandem of Ellis and Curry. The deal clears a spot for 6-foot-7 rookie Klay Thompson to take over at shooting guard, adding needed size to the starting backcourt

Ellis signed a six-year, $66 million contract in July 2008, then injured his left ankle in August in a low-speed moped crash ? an offseason activity prohibited in his deal as is a standard provision for contracts around the league. It cost him a 30-game suspension without pay.

Udoh is averaging 5.5 points and 3.9 rebounds in 21.8 minutes for the Warriors. Udoh is an athletic power forward who was Golden State's sixth pick in the 2010 draft out of Baylor. The Warriors hoped he would become a reliable defender, rebounder and shot blocker.

Brown, a former No. 1 overall pick by Washington, is likely out for the season with a chest injury and will be eligible to be a free agent this summer.

"The difficult part of this transaction is having to part ways with several players who we really value and one, in particular, Monta Ellis, who has been instrumental in our organization for the last several years," Riley said. "We wish Monta, Ekpe and Kwame the best of luck in Milwaukee and thank them for their many contributions."

The Temple Owls won't know their second round opponent in the 2012 NCAA Tournament until after Wednesday's play-in game between the Cal Golden Bears and the South Florida Bulls. Whoever wins that game will play the owls in Omaha on Friday.

The Owls earned a 5-seed in this year's tournament after going 24-7 during the regular season. That seed may have been higher, but they suffered a shocking upset to the UMass Minutemen during the Atlantic 10 Tournament despite being heavy favorites to win the championship.

Cal and USF both snuck into the Big Dance from the bubble as at-large bids. The Golden Bears finished second in the Pac-12 after going 24-9 overall. The Bulls went 20-13 overall, and 12-6 in a competitive Big East Conference.

David Cameron in Washington: we are all Atlanticists now

Mr Cameron is off to Washington. And frankly, who can blame him. A growing economy, falling unemployment and a leader who knows how to steer controversial health reforms through successfully. It?s amazing the Prime Minister hasn?t booked his ticket sooner.

His official visit, which starts tomorrow, will obviously include some serious diplomacy, especially in relation to the growing threat of military action in Iran, and impending withdrawal from the quagmire of Afghanistan. It will also signal the start of what Downing Street hopes will be a political fightback. A major state visit, followed by the Budget, and then what most analysts predict will be a set of positive quarterly growth figures. Incumbency has its advantages, and this is the month David Cameron intends to ram those advantages home.

But aside from the politicking, diplomatic and electoral, this week represents an even more significant milestone. The Triumph of Atlanticism.

For the past 50 years the debate has ? if not exactly raged ? then simmered. Should Britain embrace our American cousins, or our European neighbours? Do we continue to stick with our most significant historic alliance, or build our partnerships afresh?

In the 1970s Vietnam and Watergate cast a shadow; Europe represented a new dawn. Then the 80s saw the great Right-wing Atlantic renaissance. After that came Tony Blair, who, typically, began by casting himself as a good European, then a good Atlanticist, and finally, through his Iraqi adventurism, came close to becoming Altanticism?s unwitting nemesis.

But despite George Bush?s comical attempts to impersonate a world statesman, and Blair?s misguided attempts to cast himself as his sidekick, the issue was never quite settled. Until today. At last the great debate is over. Whether we like it or not, we are all Atlanticists now.

The European dream is dead, replaced by the grim reality of a greater Germany. The engine that will help pull Britain out of recession will bear the stars and stripes, not the flag of the EU. Our security again rests squarely in the hands of Uncle Sam, not Uncle Nicolas or Aunt Angela.

This reality is going to be hard for many people to accept, particularly many on the Left. It will be especially true as we are forced to watch Barack Obama and David Cameron sitting back and sharing a beer, a burger and a few hoops at the basketball on Tuesday. The pageantry of Wednesday?s White House banquet will also stick in the craw.

But frankly, that?s tough. We bet on a horse. And it lost.

The Left loves to taunt the Right for its fanatical Euroscepticism. But that has also frequently served to mask our own equally damaging, and fanatical, anti-Atlanticism. Reagan and Bush were villains straight out of central ? make that centre-Left ? casting. But look too at the attacks on Barack Obama, the most liberal US president in 30 years. ?The Surrender President? ? the New Statesman; ?Obama?s Wars Without End? ? The Guardian.

?Those nutty Europhobes,? we laugh, before picking up our ?Down with the Guantanamo-building, Iraq-invading, Tea-Party-loving, banker-worshipping, pistol-packing, Israeli-supporting, Chavez-poisoning Yankee imperialist? placards. Think the Eurosceptics are obsessed with plots by the bureaucrats of Brussels to enslave all free men? Just wait till you get a member of the "liberal Left" onto the subject of the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee.

Tony Blair was mocked as George Bush?s best-in-show. Indeed in 2007, long after the full horror of Iraq had been realised, he was branded ?delusional? by MPs, for claiming that "the relationship with America is what opens lots of doors everywhere, including the Middle East. For better or worse, this country for the last 10 years has been right at the heart of every single major international agenda ? whether it is terrorism, climate change, Africa.? But on the broader strategic significance of that relationship, as opposed to the Iraq catastrophe, time and history have proved him right.

Europe, whatever worthy and noble aspirations we have had for it, has proved a dead end. Many of us, me included, argued Europe was the future, the special relationship a thing of the past. We were wrong. Totally, utterly, unequivocally wrong.

At least on the former. The extent to which the US places special store on its relationship with us is a debatable point. But the warmth of the welcome being extended to David Cameron indicates Barack Obama at least recognises there is life in the old dog yet.

Thank heaven for small mercies. Not so long ago many thought we should to turn away from the United States. Dear God, no. We must grab them. Cling to them. Hold on tight and never let them go.

America, we want you. We need you. Whether you, or we, like it or not.

haaretz: India blacklists Israel Military Industries for 10 years

India has barred Israel Military Industries, as well as five other foreign defense contractors, from bidding for defense contracts in the country for 10 years. IMI was notified yesterday of Monday's decision by the Indian Ministry of Defense and says it will appeal.

The ban followed an investigation by India's Central Bureau of Investigation. The agency, which completed its probe in 2009, concluded that there was sufficient evidence to implicate the blacklisted firms in bribing Sudipta Ghosh, the former director of Ordnance Factories, and other officers to win six contracts.The companies were given hearings but the ministry found their explanations lacking.

The CBI recommended that action be taken against the companies. The decision is expected to affect not only IMI's activities in India but also those of other Israeli defense firms.

Although the outcome of the investigation had long been known, the Israeli defense establishment greeted the decision with surprise. Defense officials said they thought the hearing process for IMI was still continuing. Earlier yesterday IMI said it hadn't received official notice of the blacklist decision; the notice did however arrive later in the day.

"The Defense Ministry was surprised to hear of the decision by the Indian Ministry of Defense, because the hearing process for IMI against the intent of imposing sanctions on it had not been completed, and especially since IMI had very good claims against the move," the Defense Ministry said in a statement yesterday, adding that it will consult with IMI on a response.

IMI said in a statement that it did and does obey the law and will continue to work with the Indian authorities to resolve the issue. In any case, it said, it plans to appeal on the grounds that the conclusion is based on "erroneous facts" and ignores information submitted by the company.

It is thought that IMI had only begun developing its operations in the Indian market and had signed an agreement to build a factory - the agreement that triggered the investigation. Since the probe began IMI has all but frozen its activities in India; no other deals have been reported.

India is considered a key export market for Israeli defense companies. All the players, including Israel Aerospace Industries, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Elbit Systems, bid for Indian tenders. Some Israeli defense manufacturers are building factories in India, mainly to meet the requirements of reciprocal procurement agreements.

Industry sources outside IMI have expressed concern that IMI's presence on the blacklist could affect other Israeli firms, though there have been no signs of any recoil yet.

They also suggested that the Indian decision could hamstring Israeli government efforts to privatize IMI. Since India had been considered one of its biggest customers, the loss could diminish IMI's value.

The other companies placed on the blacklist were Singapore Technologies Kinetics, Rheinmetall Air Defence Zurich, Corporation Defence Russia, T.S. Kisan & Co. and R.K. Machine Tools. The last two are Indian companies.Bribery allegations abound

In the past, Israel Aerospace Industries had been accused of landing jobs by bribing Indian officials. The company denied the allegations and was not part of the Central Bureau of Investigation's probe.

Nor has there been any mention of adding IAI to the blacklist. After publication of the suspicions, IAI won billions of dollars worth of deals in India.

Earlier this week it turned out that Soltam, a member of the Elbit Systems group of companies, had been blacklisted by the Philippines back in July 2011, for one year.

Soltam is well known in Israeli households for its stainless steel cookware, but in military circles it's better known for making advanced artillery systems, mortars, ammunition and auxiliary equipment. Elbit Systems bought the controlling interest in Soltam in 2010, after Soltam was accused of bribing officials in Kazakhstan. The company denied the allegations.

Soltam's client in the Philippines was the army. The allegation against it isn't corruption, it's failing to deliver two orders before an October 2010 deadline. Elbit Systems did not comment on the move by Manila.

Ex-LAPD detective guilty in 1980s murder

Former detective Stephanie Lazarus was convicted of the 1986 murder of her ex-boyfriend's wife.

A quarter century after a woman's murder, jurors took little more than a day to decide Thursday the killer was a former Los Angeles police detective who was finally unmasked by her DNA and history of obsessive love for her victim's husband.

Stephanie Lazarus was impassive as she heard the first-degree murder verdict. Her long-ago lover, John Ruetten, watched grimly in the courtroom with the family of his slain wife.

Lazarus, 51, was linked to the case by a cold case team examining DNA swabs taken from a bite mark on the arm of victim Sherri Rasmussen.

Police Chief Charlie Beck, who had worked closely with Lazarus in the LAPD, apologized to the Rasmussen family for the long delay in closing the case.

"I am truly sorry for the loss of your wife, of your daughter. I am also sorry it took us so long to solve this case and bring a measure of justice to this tragedy," he said in a written statement.

"This case was a tragedy on every level," he added. "The LAPD family felt a sense of betrayal to have an officer commit such a terrible crime."

Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley was in court for the verdict and said later the case demonstrated the importance of DNA as an investigative tool.

"Had it not been for DNA the case might never have been solved," he said.

The police officer's union issued a statement saying it hoped the case would not tarnish the reputation of thousands of dedicated police officers.

The conviction came after a three-week trial that included testimony from a forensic expert who said the DNA found in the bite mark was a match to Lazarus.

Her defense attorney countered that the DNA was packaged improperly and deteriorated while stored in a coroner's freezer for two decades. He also suggested there might have been evidence tampering.

Prosecutors Shannon Presby and Paul Nunez suggested during the trial that Lazarus, a trained police officer, knew to avoid leaving other evidence such as fingerprints and may have worn gloves.

The idea that saliva from a bite mark could be her undoing was inconceivable in 1986 when DNA had not yet entered the justice system as a forensic tool.

Among those present at the verdict was Superior Court Judge Lance Ito, who presided over the first famous DNA case in the building ? the O.J. Simpson trial in 1995. Ito, whose court is down the hall from that of Superior Court Judge Robert Perry, had occasionally stopped in to listen to DNA testimony during the Lazarus trial.

The family of Rasmussen cried softly after the verdict was delivered in the courtroom ringed by 10 sheriff's deputies.

"The family is relieved that this 26-year nightmare has concluded with the positive identification of the person who killed their daughter," said John Taylor, an attorney for the Rasmussen family.

Lazarus' family also was present.
