Lions install new president, present awards
PLANT CITY --
Members of the Plant City Lions Club recently held their annual awards ceremony and installation banquet at The Catering Company Caf?.
The evening included the conclusion of Gail Lyons' term as president. She handed the gavel over to incoming president Kerri Gafford.
The following awards were presented at the June 26 ceremony: Lion of the Year, Michael Cameron; President Award and 1st Vice President Award, Gafford; 2nd Vice President Award, Steve Nierman; 3rd Vice President Award, Jason Jones; Secretary Award, Brian West; and Treasurer Award, Mark Cornett
Al Berry, Bob Fulks, Lee Williams and Jean Ann Davenport were presented with a special recognition award. The Leo special award went to Lilianna Reyes and Lyons received the past president award.
The special presenter at the ceremony was Bill Ringelstein, past council chair for the Lions. Second Vice President District Governor-Elect Judy Guam and District Governor Dean Hess were also present at the event.
Lyons remembered members who are recently deceased, including Ronald Baker, Paul Causey, Ed Martin, Ray Egbert, Juanita Ayscue and Lorean Barger.

Phelps seals another London berth
OMAHA -- Michael Phelps booked himself into another event at the London Olympics when he won the 200 meters butterfly final at the U.S. swimming trials on Thursday.
The greatest Olympian of all time remained on course to emulate his incredible eight-gold haul from Beijing four years ago with another powerful display in America's midwest.
Showing no sign of fatigue or weariness despite his gruelling schedule, the 26-year-old powered away from his rivals over the final two laps to win in one minute 53.65 seconds, more than two seconds outside his world record but still the fastest time in the world this year.
"It's not a good enough time to win a gold medal, but I think I'm okay with it," said Phelps.
"Today was the best my stroke has felt throughout the whole meet. So, in all I'm pleased, but I think I need to go faster if I want to win that at the Olympics."
Phelps's Baltimore club team mate Allison Schmitt, who is rapidly emerging as a star in her own right, clinched her second individual swim in the English capital when she won the women's 200m freestyle final ahead of teenage sensation Missy Franklin.
Schmitt followed up her impressive victory in the 400m freestyle on Monday when she led all the way to win the 200m in 1:54.40, the quickest time recorded since synthetic bodysuits were banned at the end of 2009.
Franklin, who won the 100m backstroke final on Wednesday, finished second in 1:56.79 to seal her second individual swim and her third overall with the top six finishers all securing places in the 4x200m freestyle relay.
Caitlin Leverenz won the women's 200m individual medley to earn her second swim in London after finishing runner-up in the 400m medley. Ariana Kukors, the world record holder, flashed home over the last length to grab second spot.
Phelps has now qualified for London in five events and barring any slip-ups, he will swim the exact eight-event program he contested at each of the last two Olympics, winning six golds and two bronze medals in Athens then eight golds in Beijing.
But of all his events, the 200m butterfly is his favorite and the one he has dominated the most. It was the only event he qualified for at the 2000 Sydney Olympics when he was just 15 and it was the event where he set his first world record and won his first world title.
He won the event at five world championships, has held the world record for more than a decade and won the gold medal at the past two Olympics.
"This is my fourth Olympics Games in this event, so it's special to me, special to my family, special to my mom," Phelps said.
"I have a couple of weeks to perfect some things that I'm going to need if I want to end with a good one."
Tyler Clary, who had finished third behind Phelps and Ryan Lochte in the 400m medley, qualified for his first Olympics when he finished second.
Lochte qualified equal fifth fastest in the semi-finals of the 100m freestyle but later withdrew from the final because he is already swimming the 200m medley and 200m backstroke semis on Friday night.
Lochte could still swim in the 4x100m freestyle relay in London if his time in the semis is not bettered by at least five other swimmers.
"We made a plan going into this meet that I was just going to do semi-finals of 100m free and whatever happens, happens," he said.
Lochte's withdrawal provided a lifeline for Jason Lezak to swim the final. The 36-year-old, whose stunning anchor leg swim in Beijing set the platform for Phelps's record eighth gold medal, was a reserve for the final after qualifying ninth overall.

There are people in this world are are very giving. The kind of people that will give you their last dollar if you need it. Who will listen, support, and encourage you. I am fortunate enough to know such a person, and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to pay his kindness forward by treating him at a surprise mini backyard spruce up.
My mission, which I chose to accept, was to stealthily visit the local Kmart undetected and pick up a few critical items that would be needed for this surprise. Luckily, this person has been talking for weeks, if not months, about how he wants to get a nice patio set for his deck. He also mentioned that he was interested in a water fountain for the soothing and relaxing sounds. I wasn?t sure what I would find at Kmart but I went in with determination.
I easily found the Outdoor Living section and was impressed. They had a wide selection of patio sets, outdoor furniture, and outdoor decor items. You can take a look at some of the items that were available through my shopping album. For some more products and outdoor decorating ideas, you can also browse the?Kmart Outdoor Catalog. The Kmart Social Circular also has some great ideas of how you can make your outdoor space as comfortable as your indoor space. With so many great options, it took me quite awhile to finally decide which table and decorations I would get. Here were my final selections:
When I check out at Kmart, I made sure to use my Shop Your Way Rewards card. If you don?t have your card, you should. Along with earning points that you can redeem for cash off your purchase, you also receive some amazing coupons and offers when you check out.
Once I got everything home, it was time to let the sprucing up begin. Starting out, we just had a plain ?ole deck with a doghouse. There isn?t any place to sit, there are no decorations, and the only shade comes late in the afternoon when the sun falls beneath the roof.
First, I set-up the little welcome bunny. I didn?t get a chance to pick up a plant yet, but the bunny is sitting next to the gate, welcoming everyone to the deck. If you love the bunny as much as I do, know that it?s currently on sale for just $27.99, marked down from $40.99.
Now that the entrance was ready, I set-up the bistro patio set. This set fit perfectly on the deck, providing comfortable seating for two while still leaving enough room to walk around. It was easy to assemble and looked amazing.
For some added shade, I set-up the umbrella next to it. I made sure to pick-up an umbrella base to keep it standing up.
For the finishing touch, I set-up the 3-vase water fountain on the other side of the gate. I filled it with water and powered it on. The yard was immediately filled with the soothing sound of running water.
From start to finish, it took just a little under an hour to get everything set-up. The longest part was assembling the table, which was still very quick and easy to do.
When the spruced up yard was finally revealed, it was total amazement. I heard ?I was just talking about needing a patio set for the yard!? and ?I was wanting to get a water fountain!? It was a wonderful feeling knowing that I was able to give something that was wanted to someone who never asks for anything and it was great knowing that I was able to bring a big smile to his face. There were hugs, grins and enjoyment all around.

Florida reacts to health care ruling
The Florida officials who spearheaded the appeal of sweeping health care law say they were shocked the Supreme Court upheld the law.
Attorney General Pam Bondi and her predecessor Bill McCollum led the 26 states in the appeal to get the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act declared unconstitutional, filing the suit immediately after it passed in March 2010.
Minutes after the decision was released, Bondi said she was shocked by the ruling. Bondi said the court decided the government cannot impose an individual mandate under the commerce clause, but justices ruled it's a tax and that's why the law can be upheld.
"All of us who are disappointed with the ultimate outcome today cannot lose sight of what we accomplished," Bondi said. "We fought for the principle that the Constitution limits Congress's power to direct the lives of our people, and on that point, we won."
In the two years that the case made its way through the appeals process, Republican Gov. Rick Scott ordered the state not to accept federal money.? Florida has rejected or declined to pursue more than $106 million and has returned $4.5 million.
"Today?s decision by the Supreme Court of the United States is simply disappointing," Scott said in a statement. "This is just another burden the federal government has put on American families and small businesses"
Florida's senators followed their party's positions on the health care law:
"A lot of us feel the health-care law wasn?t perfect, but it was needed," said Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla. "We passed legislation to prevent insurers from running roughshod over people. And today, the Supreme Court upheld most of these reforms."
"What?s important to remember is that what the Court rules on is whether something is constitutional or not, not whether it's a good idea," Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said in a statement. "And while the Court has said that the law is constitutional, it remains a bad idea for our economy, and I hope that in the fall we will have a majority here that will not just repeal this law, but replace it with real solutions that will insure more people and cost a lot less money."
About 3.8 million Floridians, or about 21 percent of residents of the state, are uninsured.
The state has its own health insurance exchanges, mainly for small businesses but without an individual mandate. The state has not implemented an exchange that would meet the requirements of the federal law.
The state's chief financial officer, Jeff Atwater, was so sure the law opponents call ObamaCare would be overturned, his office sent out a statement quoting him praising the court's "rejection of the individual mandate." Rand Paul (R-Ky.) moved this week to hold a noncontroversial flood insurance bill hostage until the Senate agrees that life begins at fertilization.I've long thought the amendment procress is in serious need of an overhaul. It would eliminate a lot of time wasted on horsetrading and increase transparency of the process if they never allowed unrelated amendments to be brought forward. It should be a rule, not an exception to the norm.The bill, which would financially boost the National Flood Insurance Program on the cusp of hurricane season, had been expected to pass easily in the Senate. But since Paul on Monday offered an unrelated "fetal personhood" amendment, which would give legal protections to fetuses from the moment of fertilization, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is threatening to halt progress on the legislation.
"I'm told last night that one of our Republican senators wants to offer an amendment -- listen to this one -- wants to offer an amendment on when life begins," Reid said on the Senate floor Tuesday. "I am not going to put up with that on flood insurance. I can be condemned by outside sources; my friends can say, 'Let them have a vote on it.' There will not be a vote on that on flood insurance. We'll either do flood insurance with the amendments that deal with flood insurance, or we won't do it. We'll have an extension."
Good for Harry for finally drawing a line. Hope he holds to it. The media circus around that showdown would reinforce the GOP War on Women narrative and piss off every homeowner in a flood zone. It's a win for Dems. Sadly, knowing Harry, I expect he'll crumble like a coffeecake at the first mean word in the national media.

Watch How Seth MacFarlane Became Ted
One of the more impressive aspects of Ted (in theaters this weekend) are the motion-capture effects that went into creating the world's most foul-mouthed teddy bear. Watching the film (which we did, last night), you never feel like the bear isn't right there among the rest of the cast at all times, cracking jokes while ripping bong hits alongside his best friend, Mark Wahlberg. If this film isn't?on your summer radar yet and you're a fan of dirty, hilarious, R-rated comedy, then throw this sucker on your to-do list this weekend because you may not see a funnier film all year. Oh, we're going there. Ted simply sits you down and proceeds to stuff your face full of the most obscene, offensive and surprisingly sweet comedy, and we loved every second of it.
Of course how much you enjoy the film may have a little to do with how much you enjoy Seth MacFarlane's (Family Guy) comedy. He's dirty, makes a ton of pop-culture references, and will crack jokes about everyone and anyone, no matter your race, skin color or religious beliefs. In Ted, he manages to do it as a teddy bear who magically comes to life after his little boy owner makes a wish on a shooting star, and this new featurette shows you just how they took a grown man and turned him into the kind of teddy bear every (okay, this) 35-year-old dude would love to own.?

Getty ImagesAs the NFL deals with well over 2,000 former players who are suing for concussions, the league understandably hopes to slam the door on future lawsuits from current players.
In one specific regard, the league is failing.
An Outsides the Lines report from Bob Holtzman of ESPN creates the perception of a dog chasing its tail regarding the question of whether the NFL is properly embracing technological advances that will help spot whether players should exit a game due to head trauma.
After explaining the work of North Carolina professor Kevin Guskiewicz to use helmet sensors to record in real time the force of each and every blow to the head during practice or a game, Holtzman explained that the NFL isn?t ready to say when or if the Helmet Impact Telemetry (HIT) system will be used.? The league then referred Holtzman to its expert on these matters.
And their expert is ? you guessed it ? Kevin Guskiewicz.
?I?ve been comfortable with the questions that we?ve asked and the validation studies that have been done to this point, and I feel as though we probably could have had this system in place a year or so ago,? Guskiewicz said.
?It absolutely can work in the NFL,? he added regarding the system that North Carolina now uses as a recruiting tool.? ?I?ve been doing it for eight years, so I know it can be done.?
Guskiewicz explained that eight NFL teams planned to use the HIT system in 2010, and that the plug was pulled at the ?eleventh hour.?? Citing an unnamed source, Holtzman reports that the NFL Players Association blocked the use of the HIT system.? Holtzman added that the NFLPA did not respond to repeated requests for an interview.
NBC analyst Hines Ward, who spent 14 years with the Steelers, believes players will be reluctant about using the HIT system.? ??You?re gonna open up a while Pandora?s Box with it,? Ward told Holtzman.? ?For a doctor to read a computer and tell me how hard I?ve been hit and to pull me out of a game, that won?t sit well with a lot of players.?
Ward also worries that the data will be used by owners to justify paying players less money.
Regardless, the NFL?s expert is getting impatient.? ?If we?re sitting here in a year from now and we?re not any closer to have on-field, real-time biomechanics being measured, I?ll be real frustrated, and perhaps ready to throw the towel in,? Guskiewicz said.
Lawyers interested in representing current players in future concussion lawsuit are likely feeling anything but frustrated.? With the NFL?s expert believing that the technology could have been and should have been used in 2010 ? and upset by the fact that it?s still not currently in use ? any player who suffered concussions even after the NFL had a Congress-induced epiphany in October 2009 will be able to argue that, if the NFL merely had followed the advice of its expert and used the HIT system, the player would have been pulled from a game before real damage had been done.
The report that the NFLPA stopped the implementation of the technology in 2010 complicates matters for future plaintiffs.? But that one fact could mean that future concussion lawsuits will be filed not only against the NFL, but also against the union.? (To date, concussion suits have been filed only against the league.)
Regardless, any actual or perceived failure by the stewards of the game to do everything reasonably possible to reduce head injuries or avoid them altogether will provide fodder for an ongoing stream of litigation from the men who currently play the game.? And the league?s failure to follow the advice of Kevin Guskiewicz creates a far more tangible, clear, and defined risk of liability than the Saints bounty program ever could.
