I don't (only) want to do more faster. Do you? ? Broadside

productivity

productivity (Photo credit: Sean MacEntee)

Since my wedding in September 2011, (when we took a week off locally afterward), I haven?t taken more than four days off in a row. My last extended vacation was in May 2005, three weeks in Mexico.

I?m taking a month off, starting today ? but will still blog here three times a week. I?ll also be working on a book proposal and one or two short articles, but only after the first 12 days of rest, relaxation, seeing friends and family, recharging my spent battery.

In the past 12 months, I?ve:

published my second book; done dozens of media interviews and speaking engagements to promote it; written a new afterword for the paperback, which is out July 31; hired an assistant to help me with all of this; negotiated more speaking engagements; addressed two retail conferences in Minneapolis and New Orleans; gotten married in Toronto; helped my husband deal with kidney stones; had my left hip replaced and done 3x week physical therapy for two months; served on two volunteer boards, and additionally visited Chicago and Toronto for work.

Oh, and blogging here three times a week, working with a screenwriter on the television pilot script for Malled (not picked up), and writing for a living.

Kids, I?m fried!

Time to not be productive, which leads me to this essay raises an important question, and one especially germane to any economy premised on ?productivity?:

But there are sectors of the economy where chasing productivity growth doesn?t make sense at all. Certain kinds of tasks rely inherently on the allocation of people?s time and attention. The caring professions are a good example: medicine, social work, education. Expanding our economies in these directions has all sorts of advantages.

In the first place, the time spent by these professions directly improves the quality of our lives. Making them more and more efficient is not, after a certain point, actually desirable. What sense does it make to ask our teachers to teach ever bigger classes? Our doctors to treat more and more patients per hour? The Royal College of Nursing in Britain warned recently that front-line staff members in the National Health Service are now being ?stretched to breaking point,? in the wake of staffing cuts, while a study earlier this year in the Journal of Professional Nursing revealed a worrying decline in empathy among student nurses coping with time targets and efficiency pressures. Instead of imposing meaningless productivity targets, we should be aiming to enhance and protect not only the value of the care but also the experience of the caregiver.

The care and concern of one human being for another is a peculiar ?commodity.? It can?t be stockpiled. It becomes degraded through trade. It isn?t delivered by machines. Its quality rests entirely on the attention paid by one person to another. Even to speak of reducing the time involved is to misunderstand its value.

The only thing this industrial mindset ? speed the production line! -- produces in me is frustration and annoyance.

I also attach value to the production of:

deep friendships; a happy and thriving marriage, my own physical and mental health, daily, and weekly, periods of rest and reflection.

I recently asked a friend, who out-earns me by a factor of 2.5, how she does it. The answer was to quadruple my workload, and at a speed I think probably, for me, unmanageable.

My book ?Malled?, which describes my 27 months working as a part-time retail sales associate ? supplemented by dozens of original interviews with others in the industry ? has brought me paid invitations to address several conferences of senior retail executives. I suggest to them every time that focusing solely on UPTs (units per transaction ? i.e. why they try to sell you more shit unasked for, than you want) and sales per hour is not the best or only way to go.

But numbers are safe and comforting. When corporate players hit their numbers, they keep their jobs and get their promotions/bonuses. Metrics rule.

Except when they don?t.

I once spent an hour talking to a female shopper in our store. Turns out we had a lot in common. She spent $800, which remained the single largest sale I ever had there. She also asked if I knew a good local psychotherapist. Not many people would have asked that question of a minimum-wage clothing clerk, but she?d clearly decided to trust me. I did know one and recommended him.

A year later she returned, glowing, with one of her teenage daughters, to thank me for helping her survive a very tough transition in her life.

That ?transaction? is completely meaningless in any economic sense.

Yet:

? it enriched the therapist, who well deserved a new client.

? it enriched my customer?s soul, which needed solace.

? it enriched her three daughters? lives as their mother found help she needed.

? it enriched my heart to know I?d been able to make a good match and help her.

But these powerful emotional connections are routinely dismissed as valueless behavior on any corporate balance sheet ? because they can?t be quantified, measured and compared to other metrics.

Which is why I have such a deeply conflicted relationship with capitalism.

How about you?

Do you think working harder and faster is our wisest? or only choice?

Insert Coin: Modkit Micro asks us if we're ready for six-year-olds coding Arduino boards

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.

http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/29/insert-coin-modkit-micro-graphical-programming/

What does microcontroller programming have in common with Tetris? Quite a bit if you're doing it with Modkit Micro from a Kickstarter project out of Cambridge, MA., which allows almost anyone to visually set up their hardware using graphical blocks to write the code. The partially-hooded trio behind it promises that the software is ideal for use with protyping boards from Arduino, Evil Mad Science, Lilypad, Seeed Studio, Wiring and SparkFun, and they even claim that elementary school students have used it to "take their projects from concept to reality in just a few hours." Purists should have no fear either: you can still get into a code view to see what's going on behind the scenes. A web-based Modkit Micro is being offered online starting June 1st for $25, and there'll be a desktop variant for Windows, OSX, and Linux as early as July if they reach their funding target. Check out the video after the break and then try to get your kids to wait for college before inventing version 2.0 of this.

What Makes A Business Internet Money Online Opportunity Legitimate

Why Is A Business Internet Money Online Opportunity Legitimate Versus A Fantasy Plan

Affiliate Marketing is definitely an online marketing method to provide real work in your own home jobs. It?s been connected with many different names Bum Marketing Article Marketing Internet Marketing, Online Marketing and when you are a new comer to the world of the internet, you need to recognize the distinction between what distinguishes a plan to consider your money instead of the best Business Internet Money Online Opportunity to create you money?

I will identify programs you will need to obviously understand to be able to avoid the pitfall to be requested money to create money. These fantasy schemes tend to be more numerous than the legitimate programs available like Affiliate Marketing. Being an Affiliate Internet marketer rapidly and effectively I give links to 2 assets that offer blueprints to the methodology or approaches for making money online by doing this. However, before you try these legitimate blueprints to create money online bear in mind, and that i hope not already shateringly so, of countless of the fantasy schemes which are available:

(1)The Get Wealthy Quick Plan. Easily spotted simply because they request for a number of money to train you steps to make money. They seem too good to be real. Your intuition will alert you to the fact they aren?t legitimate. They use the guise that they?re giving you a good deal. One program listed a savings well over $23,000 dollars if you simply invested $597 dollars today. Sure?

(2)The Ponzi Plan. We all have experienced lately how painful this kind plan bilked multi-riches from money by the master mind Bernard Madoff. The Ponzi plan has gone out and out fabrication or lie that the legitimate business is behind an offering using false documentation and products to trick the consumer. You can do this so effectively that even the wealthy could be taken for millions. Make sure that who you coping is legitimate!

(3)The Matrix Plan, Elevator Plan, Escalator Plan or Ladder Plan. They are schemes including the exchange of money for any product. But you won?t get the product but given an opportunity for any side bonus to be put into a waiting list for any product of greater value. Ultimately you taken care of a product and get nothing awaiting the better product. Pretty sneaky and beware.

(4)The Compensated-For Opportunity Plan. The ?Taken care of? is work of some type that you are taken care of. Within this chronilogical age of the computer, it may be simply doing web page hits or surveys. They even seem to be legitimate and you might get $.50 for any 3 hour survey or $.05 for 1,000 clicks a web site. Sounds pretty lucrative, huh?

(5)The Internet Pyramid Plan. In 2003, The Federal trade commission revealed what it really known as an internet-based pyramid plan. Customers would pay a registration fee to become listed on a program and buy a package of goods and services. The company offered ?significant commissions? to consumers who bought and sold again the package. The Federal trade commission determined that the company?s program was rather a pyramid plan because it didn?t disclose that many consumers? money could be stored, which the company gave participants material that permitted these to scam others. What people is going to do for money?

(6)The HYIP Plan. The High-Yield Investment Program (HYIP) plan is a kind of Ponzi plan. It?s an investment scam that promises an unsustainably (unbelieveably) high roi by having to pay previous traders with the money invested by beginners. You will need to pay money to get money. Beware. They?ll appear legitimate saying you will get returns of 100 to 500%. Honest ones usually invest your money such things as goods, financial instruments, offshore stocks, along with other investment programs that may return, maybe as much as 3% daily, if all things ?re going in the opportunities favor. Far from 100 to 500%!

(7)The Payment Randomizer Plan. This really is the latest earn money fast on the Internet schemes that claims you just collect money. Upon your initially registering for between $1 to $20 you get a person id that?ll be connected having a button on the page that at random, when the next person clicks it, may pay you money. The page or website demonstrates enormous cash making opportunities based on your energy production. It is simply pure gambling with hardly any roi. Who?s making all the money? The founder?s of the sites who?re charging the initial fees. You would be best doing (4) above.

The famous entrepreneur and founding father of Ringling Siblings and Barnum & Bailey circus, P.T. Barnum was cited as saying, There is a sucker born every minute. Do not be that sucker, but research legitimate business internet money online opportunities like Affiliate Marketing and you will ultimately be effective.

Issues to consider while preparing Projected Financial Statements ...

?

The Compass Group PLC specializes in providing food and catering services to various institutions, schools, hospitals around the world. They started as domestic operator in London in 1992. Within a short period of only 17 years, they have expanded to achieve a truly global reach with operations based out in 55 countries. The Compass Group PLC is present 40000 locations. (Financial Report, 2008)

The business strategy of Compass Group is a unique one; operations are executed mostly from the premises of the customer they serve and this allows them the comfort of low investments.

This paper is aimed at two goals; it researches the performance of the company using financial ratios and also uses the CAGR method to forecast the financial performance of the company for the year ending September 30, 2009.

?

All data used in preparation of this report has been collected from the company annual reports. Data for the past four years has been used, starting from 2005. On an average, sales have witnessed an upward trend, except for the odd year of 2007 when it fell by five percent to ?10,268 million. The CAGR for the sales revenue has been calculated at 2.6%, which predicts the 2009 sales figure to be ?11,735 million. A positive growth in sales is accompanies by a positive growth in operating expenses. The CAGR in operating cost comes to around 2.2%, which accounts for a projected figure of 11,020 million. The operating profit which is the difference between sale of goods and costs of goods sold grows by an impressive 11.0% which pushes up the 2009 Operating profit figures to 727 million. The operating profit thus obtained is added to the share of profit from associates to arrive at the total operating profits. Since, the figure of share of profit from associates is zero in 2005; it has been assumed that the figure of 2009 will remain same as that of 2008. The total operating profit figure for 2009, hence, stands at 733 million.

The financial income for the period of last four years has grown by 46.5 %. Individually, the growth rates for 2006 and 2007 have been the main drivers of this cumulative figure. A commendable outcome of the financial strategies has been the reduction in the cost of finance, which has come down from 156 million pounds in 2005 to 100 million in 2008. In CAGR terms, this amounts to a decline of 8.5%. The estimated cost of finance for the year 2009 is predicted at 91 million.

The profit before tax figures are calculated by adding finance income to and subtracting cost of finance and hedging account effectiveness from the total operating profit figure. An impressive increase in finance income and hedging effectiveness has affected a positive rise in the profit before tax figures by 19.4%; the figures of the same as per estimation is likely to be 676 million in 2009.

The tax liability of the company has marked a steady rise all throughout the period at a rate of 11.7%. As a result, the predicted figures for the same have been calculated to be 189 million.

The profit after tax consists of two components; profits from continuing operations and profit from discontinuing operations. The profit from continuing operations is calculated by subtracting the tax liability from the profit before tax figures. Figures for profit from dis continuing operations have been taken directly from the published financial reports of the company. The sum of these components gives a forecasted profit after tax figure of 525 million for the year 2009.

The performance of the company gets reflected in its capital market indicators as well. The EPS figures have witnessed a healthy growth of about 24% in both its basic and diluted form. The estimated EPS figures for 2009 i.e. pegged at 29 pence.

In order to keep things Simple while analysing the balance sheet, only the major components have been taken under the preview of research. For ease of comparison, the percentage CAGR figures have been rounded to nearest whole numbers.

A comparison of the 2007 and 2008 figures reveal that both total assets and total liabilities have increased; total liabilities have increased more than total assets by about a margin of 1%. The company has increased its capital assets, in the form of plants and machinery, by about three percent to 4,532 million in 2008. Using the growth rate of 6%, the projected capital assets figure for 209 stands at 4789 million. Our analysis reveals that the company?s ammortised goodwill will over the time period at a rate of 5% to3454 million. In addition to this, the intangible assets have undergone a change; it demonstrated?? a rise of 13% for the year ended on 30 September 2008. The figures for the same are predicted to be around 442 million.

There has been no significant increase in current assets; it has increased by only 16 points to 2389 in 2008. The non descript rate of growth assumes that it will near 2397 million in 2009. This is accompanied by an increase in inventories by 9%. Since the company provides catering services, it will need to maintain inventories to be able to cater to demands of the customers. As a natural consequence, a growth in business will get reflected in the growth of inventories.

The Olympics, Reality Shows, and Canadian Cop Dramas

Apart from the Olympics, there are other signs that summer habits might be changing. According to the Los Angeles Times, 58 percent of U.S. homes watched prime-time television in August 2011, up from 56 percent in August 2009. Some of the change is surely driven by all that new cable content, but there is a technological component, too. Patricia McDonough, senior vice president of planning policy and analysis at Nielsen, told me that increasing adoption of DVRs?about half of U.S. households now have one?means the summer ratings dip is less pronounced than in the past: ?At 8 o?clock we may still be outdoors, but by 9 or 10, we may be in and watching programming. Now we don?t have to miss our favorite show if it?s on at 8, because we can DVR it and watch it when we get back.? And it?s not just DVRs. TV catch-up service Hulu has announced 10 original or exclusive programs that will unspool over the summer. What?s more, as of 2012, most mobile phones are smartphones, which means viewers can take their TV habits beyond the living room. ?If I?m out in the backyard barbecuing, I can still be watching the ball game. So the television is going with us this year probably more than ever before, and that?s a trend that will continue,? says McDonough. Right now, TV networks can?t sell advertising against that al fresco viewing, because it doesn?t show up in the standard Nielsen ratings, but the company has recently established a smartphone panel and other cross-platform measurements, so that may soon change.

Social Networking Tips For Successful Business Marketing ...

Search Blog Database

Category: Social Media Marketing | Added on: Sunday, May 27th, 2012 | Total: 97 Views

Commit yourself to building a strong relationship with your customer base, if that is the type of relationship you want. Drive sales to your site with simple advertising messages delivered via social media. If you desire getting on the same level as your customers, just say hello to them! Your customers will let you know where to go from there.

It is important to used varied content to entice people to follow the social media marketing campaign that you are promoting. Generate posts that relate to your niche. These could include stories or perhaps external provider links can be made available from within your industry. Try running contests, posting pictures or asking questions. Interact with those whom you follow. Engage them with your product as opposed to using sales pitches repeatedly. Try to find ways to have customers think about how your business and products adds to their way of life, rather than how you will affect them financially.

Use the programs Twellow or Tweepi to find the best Twitter followers. These programs are designed to locate the highest attention lists, and also who runs them. Then, you can send messages suggesting that your account be added to their lists.

You cannot do well in social media if people aren?t visiting your profile or are not interested in your content. Take some time planning, writing and then proofreading the content to make sure it is engaging and informative. You can add captivating headlines and sub-headlines as a polishing touch.

If you tweet only quotations from other people, your followers will quickly learn that you don?t have anything of your own to say. Your followers will view the material as filler material, which is insignificant and often ignored. Only post things that have something to do with your company or if you do it yourself.

Users can update their location through their mobile phones with Facebook Places. Build your own Facebook place and give your customers a discount for checking in ? they can show you they?ve done it on their smartphone. Foursquare has a similar feature you should think about using.

When you are looking to create content to put on your Twitter of Facebook, make sure it is proofread. You should make sure your work looks professional. Limit your use of abbreviations in your writing when using sites such as Twitter. Try really hard to make sure your content looks good.

Until you develop you own unique style in the social media world, mimic the style of those that you admire. You need to find out how your competition works in the field of social media marketing, then you should copy it for a while, so you can find out what makes you and the people you service successful. Discover their social profiles. Analyze what they post, as well as the specials that they run.

Have a party organized around Twitter. In other words you should organize a certain time when your audience is going to use Twitter in order to chat about certain specific topics using hash tags. Other bloggers are a great source to help advise your customers. Make sure all of them blog about your upcoming party to their own unique audience.

You should find different ways to interact with customers on a personal, as well as professional, level. Leave them comments on their Facebook status or blog post if you feel that this is appropriate. This does not mean jumping in on a personal exchange, but it should be aimed at issues that are relevant to your product or service.

There are countless advantages of using social media marketing for your business. Most people have profiles and are ready to interact with you and learn more about your products. These tips have opened your mind to the things that social media makes possible. Sign up on popular networks and start working.

Scottish Church Group: SSM a "Social Experiment in Which the Guinea Pigs are Children"

?

The UK Press Association:

Legalising same-sex marriage would "legitimise and encourage" the existence of fatherless or motherless children, according to a report.

A Free Church of Scotland study panel examined the issues surrounding marriage, divorce and remarriage.

The study comes as responses to the Scottish Government's consultation on gay marriage are evaluated.

Referring to same-sex couples, the Free Church report said: "By getting the right to marry, they get more respectability for bringing up children (they already have the right to foster and adopt).

"This is a huge social experiment in which the guinea pigs are children. That is not fair or just to children and does not safeguard their rights. It is really being pushed in a doctrinaire way by the gay lobby without any consideration of the harm that it will do."

The church said that civil partnerships already give same-sex couples the same legal rights as marriage, and therefore there is no need to introduce same-sex marriage.

Denver parade salutes service, sacrifices of veterans

Logan Sullivan waved at the passing parade, holding his miniature American flag in front of him as he inched his way toward the servicemen and woman who walked by.

When his father, T. Sgt. Matthew Sullivan, called him back, the 4-year-old took a seat on his father's knee while his dad explained the different uniforms and pointed to the polished cars.

"Today is letting him understand they are people you need to remember and give praise for what they've done," Sullivan said. "This isn't just a barbecue weekend."

The Memorial Day Remembrance Parade made its way through downtown Denver on Saturday, before wrapping around Civic Center. Families and veterans were scattered along the sidewalks along Broadway, between 14th and 13th avenues.

"We must pause to give thanks to the men and women who have given their lives and continue to fight," Denver Mayor Michael Hancock said before the parade began.

Sullivan, who has served 13 years in the U.S. Air Force and is currently stationed at Buckley Air Force Base, said more people should have been at the parade and ceremonies Saturday.

Before the parade, families of the men and women killed in action placed roses next to photos of their loved ones during the Wreath Remembrance Ceremony at the Colorado Veterans Monument in Lincoln Park.

The guest speaker, Col. Pat Blassie, commander of the Air Reserve Personnel Center at Buckley Air Force Base, spoke to the crowd about the importance of each story of every lost hero.

Blassie's brother, 1st Lt. Michael Blassie was killed in 1972 during the Vietnam War. Her family was told that her brother was killed in action and his body was never recovered.

"We tried to go on with our lives in so many ways," Blassie said.

Twenty-six years later, Blassie and her family learned that her brother's remains were interred in the Tomb of the Unknown Solider in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.

Years after Michael Blassie's remains were returned to his family in St. Louis, his sister continues to tell his story.

"Each hero has a story," Pat Blassie said.

Andy Carvin on Twitter as a newsroom and being human

Andy Carvin on Twitter as a newsroom and being human
By Mathew Ingram, May. 25, 2012

By now, many people are familiar with the story of how NPR editor Andy Carvin used Twitter to create a kind of crowdsourced newswire during the Arab Spring revolutions in the Middle East last year, inventing a brand-new kind of journalism on the fly and in full public view. In a discussion with me on Thursday in Toronto about the lessons that can be learned from his experience, Carvin made some interesting points about the value of such an approach ? including the importance of being transparent about the process, and the virtues of being human. The discussion at the Mesh 2012 conference (full disclosure: I am a cofounder) touched on a number of different elements of what Carvin did during the uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt, including two important factors that allowed him to take on the role that he did. The first was the nature of his job at NPR, which ? as a senior digital strategist ? allowed him to experiment with new tools and take risks. The second was the fact that he already had a number of contacts in the Middle East through his work with Global Voices and other social advocacy groups (Harvard researcher and author David Weinberger, whom I also interviewed at the conference, live-blogged the session with Carvin). Both of these meant that Carvin was perfectly positioned to do what he did when dissidents started revolting in Tunisia, and then following that

in Egypt and Libya. He also noted with a laugh that ?it helps when you have ADHD? (which he does), because for several months during the height of those revolutions, he was spending almost every waking minute reading or posting on Twitter, managing several lists of dissidents and thousands of responses from followers. His peak output reached 1,400 tweets a day at one point, whereupon Twitter blocked his account as spam. Not a newswire, but a crowdsourced newsroom of public editors But Carvin also talked about how he approached the reporting of realtime events on Twitter, and how he doesn?t really like having what he did called a ?newswire.? Instead, he says he prefers to think of it as a crowdsourced newsroom ? with him as the reporter, or the anchor (or ?news DJ,? another term he likes to use) pulling in reports from different places, and then relying on his followers to act as editors and sources, fact-checking and verifying and also distributing the news that he was curating. As he put it: I get uncomfortable when people prefer my twitter feed as a newswire. It?s not a newswire. It?s a newsroom. It?s where I?m trying to separate fact from fiction, interacting with people. That?s a newsroom. In many cases, Carvin says, this process worked remarkably well ? and quickly. In one photo of Egypt, for example, someone he asked for an opinion said that the corner of a building in the background was clearly a prominent local landmark, and then sent a link to a Google Earth view of the building, allowing Carvin to confirm within minutes that it was the same location.

He also gave his followers what he called ?fire drills,? in which he would ask them to fact-check photos that he knew were fake and then he would look at how many errors they found. And what happened when he made a mistake and posted something that wasn?t accurate? In one case, he distributed a photo he thought was of a woman who had been shot in battle and was being attended to by nurses ? but it turned out she was actually dead, his followers told him, and her body was being prepared for burial. Carvin says he admitted his mistake multiple times, and then retweeted both the criticisms and the corrections as broadly as possible: You have to be prepared to be accountable in real time. When I screw up, my followers tell me. News as a process, and the virtues of being human The NPR editor, who is now working on a book about his experiences, says he believes in the ?news as a process? approach, as author Jeff Jarvis and others have described it ? in which not only is the reporting of an event crowdsourced in real time, but new information is added and mistakes are also corrected by readers, who journalism professor Jay Rosen has called ?the people formerly known as the audience? (recent events have also shown how social networks like Twitter and Reddit can act as fact-checking engines). As I tried to argue in a Twitter debate on Friday with a number of people (which Craig Silverman of the Poynter Institute curated with Storify) I think there is a lot of public value in doing what Carvin did, by assembling and fact-checking and correcting information in real time. That?s not to say editors don?t have value, or that reporters shouldn?t try to report things as accurately as possible.

But when errors are made, I think admitting them publicly and being seen to correct them (not something traditional media is very good at) actually builds trust. For me ? and I think for Carvin ? doing this is connected to a larger principle, and that is the value of being human, and of expressing that humanity, even if it means acknowledging a mistake. The NPR editor also admitted that in some cases he was so disturbed by the videos and images he was seeing from Egypt and elsewhere that he responded on Twitter in a way that he says might not have been professional ? but he still felt was justified. As Weinberger noted in his live-blog: ?Andy perfectly modeled a committed journalist who remains personal, situated, transparent, and himself.? This is the kind of thing that mainstream media outlets discourage, just as many try to avoid admitting that they have made mistakes. Restrictive social-media policies put in place by many of these outlets seem designed to remove as many of the elements of being human as possible from the practice of being a journalist ? which I think is the exact opposite of what needs to happen if traditional journalism is to survive. And I think Andy Carvin is a pretty good example of what one possible future of real-time, crowdsourced journalism actually looks like.

Meeks lends a hand to help students with college loans | Queens ...

Posted on May 24, 2012 by Rich Bockmann in Congress, District 6, U.S. House

Gregory Meeks (r.) looks on as Jennifer Ching speaks about options for student borrowers. Photo by Rich Bockmann

With student loan debt at an all-time high and the cost of certain federal student loans set to get even more expensive, U.S. Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-Jamaica) announced efforts to make an affordable education available to southeast Queens students.

In May, outstanding student loans surpassed the nation?s credit card debt when the total hit $1 trillion, and according to the Institute for College Access & Success, the average New Yorker from the class of 2010 graduated with about $26,000 in debt. Interest rates on federal Stafford ?loans, for students with financial needs, are scheduled to increase from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent if Congress does not act to extend the reduced rate when it expires July 1.

?If we don?t do anything, Stafford loans ? school loans ? will go up, will double, putting a burden on these students that is unbelievable,? Meeks said alongside education advocates at his Jamaica office Monday.

In addition to discussing his support for the effort to maintain student loan interest rates, the congressman also said he had scheduled a town hall meeting, ?A Call to Action: Know the Options on Student Loan Debt,? next month at York College to hear from students and put them in contact with education finance experts.

Jennifer Ching, director of Queens Legal Services, said the nonprofit sees about 10,000 people every year with some type of debt problem and compared the increase in student loan debt to the consumer credit and foreclosure crises that hurt southeast Queens.

?Student loan debt is, just as with all other forms of debt in this country, disproportionately distributed against low-income and communities of color and targets of predatory lending,? she said, pointing out that for-profit educational institutions and unsavory lenders target students in much the same way that southeast Queens homeowners were targeted with subprime mortgages.

A graduate of Harvard University and New York University?s law school, Ching said it took her two decades to pay back nearly $290,000 in debt, and at times she had to pay out close to $4,000 a month.

?These past 20 years have been what I call, and my family affectionately calls, the Ramen [noodle] years,? she joked, adding that allowing interest rates to double, on top of other increases to the cost of living and a depressed job market, make post-graduate life a struggle.

?You simply cannot live,? she said. ?It?s about leveling the playing field for our clients and our communities.

Meeks said lawmakers are butting heads over how to fund the lower interest rates. Republicans, he said, are insistent on cuts to women?s health care, which he called a ?non-starter.? Meeks suggested as an alternative finding savings in other programs or raising revenues.

His town hall meeting is scheduled for June 13 at 5:30 p.m. in the Faculty Dining Room at York College, at 94-20 Guy R. Brewer Blvd.

Obama, Dems redoubling money efforts to keep edge

ATHERTON, Calif. (AP) ? His cash advantage threatened, President Barack Obama and his party are redoubling their fundraising efforts after robust hauls by Republican rival Mitt Romney and a slew of GOP-leaning super PACs that are raking in cash from the party faithful highly motivated to topple the Democrat.

Obama still has a significant edge, but it's shrinking rapidly.

That explains why the president, fresh off of back-to-back international summits, plunged back into his re-election race Wednesday with a series of fundraising events in Denver and California's Silicon Valley. The president was looking to stockpile cash to pay for his coast-to-coast organization, advertising to spread his message and get-out-the-vote operations in key states.

"We're going to have to contend with even more negative ads, even more cynicism and nastiness and just plain foolishness," Obama said in Denver. "But the outcome of the election is ultimately going to depend upon all of you." A woman shouted, "We'll just have to work harder."

It's the start of an extensive money push by Obama in the coming weeks that will feature a series of high-end fundraisers, including New York events with former President Bill Clinton and actress Sarah Jessica Parker and a Los Angeles trip to raise money among gay and lesbian supporters. Smaller-dollar pushes also are under way.

Obama, a record-shattering fundraiser four years ago, has a built-in fundraising advantage as the incumbent and still has a wide money lead over Romney, the challenger who only recently combined fundraising efforts with the Republican National Committee after a bruising ? and expensive ? primary.

But well-funded Republican outside groups, which are able to raise unlimited sums from donors, are narrowing that gap quickly and using their multimillions to run a slew of TV ads hammering Obama in key states. Obama aides acknowledge the possibility that he could be outraised by the influx of Republican money.

The numbers tell the story.

Through April, Obama and Democratic groups supporting his re-election bid have raised nearly $450 million during the election cycle and have more than $150 million in the bank. Romney and Republicans backing him have collected more than $400 million during the same stretch and have about $80 million at their disposal.

Gone is the 10-to-1 cash advantage that Obama held at the end of March.

To be sure, Romney was bound to erode that money gap as he pivoted to the general election. He still, however, lags on another measure of campaign strength: Obama has had months to prepare an extensive ground game to identify, register and turn out voters.

On the money front, Romney has benefited from a strong desire among GOP activists to defeat Obama, multiple GOP outside groups willing to spending tens of millions of dollars and a well-oiled fundraising machine within his own campaign. Showing that prowess, the former Massachusetts governor raised $15 million this week during three days of fundraising in New York.

"What you see in a very short period of time is a very well-run operation that is putting Gov. Romney in a position where he's going to, maybe not outspend, but to compete with the collective Democratic fundraising," said Sara Taylor Fagen, a former political director for President George W. Bush.

Romney has been the all-but-certain GOP nominee for more than a month now, and while he's focused primarily on fundraising, super PACs backing him have been going toe to toe with Obama's campaign in TV advertising. That means that Romney hasn't had to spend heavily from his own campaign account. Chief among those groups has been Crossroads GPS and its affiliated super PAC, Crossroads USA, which quickly matched Obama's ad buy this month after the president's team laid out plans for a $25 million advertising campaign.

Democrats haven't had as much success with super PACs.

A pro-Obama group, Priorities USA Action, has badly lagged behind Crossroads, while Romney has gotten extra help from another super PAC, Restore Our Future. Mary Beth Cahill, a former campaign manager for Sen. John Kerry, recently came aboard as an adviser to help Priorities.

The influx of campaign cash in the first presidential campaign since the 2010 Citizens United ruling by the Supreme Court, which helped create super PACs, has taken some Democrats by surprise.

"I don't think anyone realized going into this cycle exactly how much money was going to be involved," said former Rep. Martin Frost, D-Texas, a past chairman of the fundraising arm for House Democrats. "This is a brave new world of campaign finance."

Obama was cheered by 550 supporters in Denver, where tickets at a fundraiser started at $250 and topped out at $40,000 per couple for a photo with the president. Obama accused Romney of seeking to return to economic policies that preceded the recession. "It's the same old stuff they've been peddling for years," the president said.

Afterward in California, Obama spoke at a fundraising dinner in Atherton that included a performance by David Crosby and Graham Nash. About 60 people paid $35,800 per person to attend. The president said the nation had made significant strides during the past 3 1/2 years but said "we may not even finish it in 5 years but I certainly need 5 more years to get us locked in on where we need to go."

Obama capped the night at a reception with 1,100 people in Redwood City, with a performance by Ben Harper. Tickets started at $250, with some couples paying $12,500 for a photo with the president. On Thursday, Obama was speaking at a private fundraising breakfast in San Jose.

To keep his edge, Obama isn't just focusing on big money.

Many of the planned high-dollar fundraisers include a raffle designed to raise millions more and get more people involved.

In some cases, the grass-roots component raises more than the swanky fundraiser: Of the $15 million Obama raised at a celebrity-studded dinner two weeks ago at actor George Clooney's Los Angeles home, $9 million came from small-dollar donors hoping to win a chance to attend.

Clinton, arguably the most prominent Democratic fundraiser not in the White House, is joining Obama for two events in New York on June 4. Obama's campaign also is raffling off a trip to New York ? including airfare and hotel for what's being called "Barack on Broadway" ? for two winners and their guests to attend. The two presidents will attend a dinner later that evening featuring a performance by Jon Bon Jovi.

Two days later, Obama jets to Los Angeles for a high-dollar reception with gay and lesbian supporters, featuring a performance by Pink, and a $25,000-per person dinner at the Beverly Hills home of "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy and his fianc? David Miller. Events also are planned next month in Baltimore, Boston and back in New York, where the president will raise money at the home of Parker, of "Sex and the City" fame. A travel-package raffle for small-donors is tied to that, too.

"It should be fabulous," Parker said in an email to Obama supporters.

Obama began airing two new ads Wednesday, one about his work with veterans returning from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and another aimed at seniors dependent on Medicare.

In the veterans spot, Obama credits veterans for allowing the U.S. to "go after al-Qaida and kill (Osama) bin Laden" and says the nation has a "sacred trust" to help veterans heal their wounds and find jobs. The ad on Medicare notes that Obama was raised by his grandparents and cites his administration's efforts to root out health care fraud.

The TV ads are part of the $25 million ad buy the Obama campaign launched in May, running in Colorado, Florida, North Carolina, Iowa, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia.

Romney spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg said Obama's team can't "distract voters from three years of broken promises on Medicare and our commitments to our veterans."

"At this time investigators believe this to be a domestic-related murder-suicide situation," Okada said.

A sixth body was found alongside the road about a mile from the home Tuesday morning. Police said it wasn't known whether that death was related.

Police haven't released any names.

"It was just really surreal what was going on down there," said Dan Grove, a neighbor. "I basically witnessed people screaming and saying that there were people in the house, and I just feel bad for the family."
